Lightning hits Yonkers City Hall; no injuries

YONKERS — Lightning struck City Hall this afternoon, sending debris from the roof crashing into a courtyard below.

The bolt hit at 1:28 p.m. with a loud noise and scattered the debris.

No one was injured.

Officials temporarily closed the City Hall parking garage as a precaution in case further debris fell. Workers were inspecting the roof for damage.

sounds like a tornado touched down in rockland in the nyack area. from what i am hearing on the fire radio it at least ripped a shed apart at the thruway authority area on the west side of the bridge.

MAJOR STORM: Possible tornado hits region; Saw Mill closed

MOUNT PLEASANT — A severe storm that may have included a tornado in Mount Pleasant has resulted in the shutdown of the Saw Mill River Parkway, near county police headquarters.

The parkway is closed northbound at Eastview and southbound at 9A. Traffic is being diverted behind headquarters, said Lt. Michael Palumbo.

Damage from high winds are being reported by residents and on police scanners in central Westchester.

A tornado watch for the Lower Hudson Valley is in effect until 8 p.m.

The National Weather Service issued the warning for Putnam, Rockland, Westchester and nearby counties on top of predictions of thunderstorms and whipping winds. Federal forecasters issued a flood watch from 4 p.m. into the night.

Commuters should be prepared for delays on the parkways in Westchester.

Scattered power outages were being reported, including about 2,000 customers throughout Westchester.

A large concentration of the outages were in Mount Pleasant, New Castle, Sleepy Hollow and Cortlandt, according to Con Edison.

Mimi Godwin, who lives at the north end of Tarrytown, said it looked like a tornado passed through her neighborhood. A huge tree fell in her yard and the outdoor furniture blew away.

"I've got total destruction in my backyard," she said. "My patio's been destroyed."

The wild weather is expected to diminish later in the week, with forecasts for sunny skies on Friday and the weekend.

Severe weather causes damage in the Tri-State

Powerful thunderstorms struck towns all around New York City's northern suburbs on Wednesday afternoon, doing significant damage, spawning waterspouts and prompting a tornado warning at one point. More stormy weather is on the way for Wednesday night.

The biggest wave of strong storms pushed through from around 3:30 p.m. through 5:00 p.m. hitting Westchester County and Fairfield County in Connecituct. More thunderstorms were to our west, and on their way to us. They are expected around 8:00 p.m.

Eyewitness News has reports of a waterspout near the Tappan Zee bridge. Fire departments report seeing the phenomenon, in which swirling winds form a waterspout over a body of water.

And the Westchester County Office of Emergency Management is reportedly responding to an as yet unconfirmed report of a tornado touchdown near Saw Mill River Road in Hawthorne.

In Sleepy Hollow, Mayor Zegarelli says what looks to be a tornado came across the river and touched down near the old General Motors plant site. Witnesses say it hopscotched up Beekman Ave up to Route 448. There is said to be a significant amount of damage in that area, with trees down, and power outages.

A severe storm has slammed into Greenwich this afternoon, taking down power lines and tree limbs and prompting a tornado warning. Police say they are not sure if a tornado actually touched down anywhere.

TRANSIT PROBLEMS:

The storm weather had started to cause transit problems by 4:00 p.m. Metro North reported service disrupted on the Harlem Line where numerous trees are down across the track in the area of Stevens Avenue just north of North White Plains. There were no problems reported on the Hudson or New Haven Lines.

Also, New York State DOT spokesperson Colleen McKenna tells us that trees are down where the Taconic and Saw Mill Parkways meet. Both of those parkways are closed in that area and police are diverting traffic. It's not clear when they'll reopen, but crews are on the way to move the trees.

Other problems on area roads:

Town of Mt Pleasant: Rte 9A at Skyline Dr closed both directions

Rte 9A/100 at the Saw Mill Pkwy, closed in both directions

Saw Mill Pkway closed in both directions at exit 26/Rte 100 in Hawthorne closed in both directions

Town of North Castle: Rte 22 between Rte 120 and Rye Lake Bridge closed in both directions

Two tornadoes touched down one in Tarrytown and one in Hawthorne, news reports say it went right across the Saw mill, mother nature is on fire today!!!

Road, Metro-North alerts

Northbound Metro-North Railroad service has resumed north of the North White Plains station, railroad spokeswoman Marjorie Anders said at 5:30 p.m. Service had shut down for an hour because of trees across the tracks in Mount Pleasant.

Southbound travelers were still being bused between Chappaqua and North White Plains.

"People should expect serious delays," Anders said.

Still, she said it was better to stick with train travel because the roads were in such poor shape in that area.

"This is one of those nights where it might be better to go out to dinner before you go to (Grand Central) terminal, or go to dinner in the terminal," she said.

Authorities reported problems or closings on the following roads due to this afternoon's storm

— Wilson Park Drive in Tarrytown

— Beekman Ave in downtown Sleepy Hollow

— Route 9A in Mount Pleasant

— Saw Mill Parkway closed in Mount Pleasant; damage for about 3/4 mile

— Route 22 around the Kensico Reservoir closed in both directions; Route 120 closed

— Route 120 heading toward Westchester County Airport.

— About a dozen trees out by their roots at entrance to IBM headquarters

— Staging areas at Applebees parking lot in Mount Pleasant, also at police or fire academy in Valhalla.

Storm blows through southern Rockland

ORANGETOWN — Trees and electrical wires are down and one lane on River Road in Grand View is closed after a severe storm hit southern Rockland this afternoon.

"Some of the residents wondered if it was a tornado," South Nyack-Grand View police Chief Robert Van Cura said.

The National Weather Service could not yet confirm if the storm, which darkened skies and brought powerful winds just before 4 p.m. today, was a tornado.

Van Cura said one man who was standing outside when the storm hit suffered a minor head injury after being struck by debris.

One lane of River Road, just south of the Tappan Zee Bridge, is closed so county Highway Department crews can clear the road.

Van Cura said the storm system traveled a fairly narrow swath in the village. The system moved east, causing a waterspout on the Hudson River, before heading into Tarrytown and Hawthorne.

A tornado watch for the Lower Hudson Valley is in effect until 8 p.m.

POWER OUTAGES:

Con Edison crews are responding to power outages caused by a tornado and other severe weather conditions in sections of Westchester County.

The utility is assessing damage and estimates that up to 5,000 customers are currently without power.

Sleepy Hollow, Tarrytown, Mt. Pleasant, New Castle and Hawthorne are among the communities hardest hit.

Con Edison asks all customers to stay away from any downed power lines and to treat them as live wires. The company urges customers to call 1-800-75CONED to report downed power lines.
