Just got home from work...I-684 southbound just south of exit 3 (Armonk) looks like a warzone. You can see where the tornado crossed over the southbound lanes into the northbound ones and into the Greenwich area. It's about a 500' by 500' swath of sheared trees. Multiple road closures in Greenwich as well between Glenville and Armonk. Unbelievable...

This is in todays Journal News. A little history on when previous Tornadoes touched down here in Westchester County.

• June 2, 2000: Continental Village in Cortlandt was hit by a tornado when winds of up to 100 mph whipped through the lakeside community on the West-chester-Putnam border. The tornado, which hit about 7:30 p.m., snapped some of the neighborhood's large evergreens. One resident suffered a broken vertebra when the deck he was on collapsed because of the wind.

• July 10, 1989: A tornado tore through the King's Grant condominium complex in Carmel. The 200-mph winds ripped off roofs, flattened trees and tossed pink insulation around the 150-unit complex off Fair Street. The tornado also flattened two houses on Fair Street and threw around metal garbage bins. It was first sighted in the Brewster Heights section of Southeast before touching down in Carmel about 6 p.m. that day. No one was seriously injured and property damage was estimated at $5 million.

• Sept. 26, 1977: A tornado was recorded in the Ossining area.

• Sept. 1, 1974: A tornado was recorded in the Yonkers area.

• Aug. 11, 1971: A tornado was recorded in the Mount Vernon area.

• July 29, 1971: A storm dropped a funnel down in a Mahopac business district, between Route 6 and Lake Mahopac. It wrenched the roof off Whalen Moving and Storage Co. and dumped it on a nearby home. Many businesses, including Mahopac Marine, were damaged before the tornado moved across the lake. No injuries were reported.

• Aug. 9, 1968: A tornado touched down briefly in the northern section of Philipstown.

• June 11, 1922: A suspected tornado is credited with widespread damage along the Westchester coast from New Rochelle to Harrison and the northern part of New York City at City Island, according to the account in the "History of West-chester."

"The wind blew for 20 minutes ... and left 50 electric wires down and 200 shade trees uprooted in New Rochelle," the account says. Although there was "considerable warning given," the storm was blamed for sinking thousands of boats and "taking eight lives and leaving other bathers to a fate of the unknown."

• 1812: The earliest recorded tornado in the Westchester-Putnam area blew through White Plains, Harrison, Rye and Greenwich, tearing up trees, orchards, barns and fences, said Jerome Thaler, a local climate historian and National Weather Service observer.

Storm did F-2 damage the winds had to be between 112-156 mph the california closet sustained alot of damage. Westchester should consider installing sirens for warning people when storms like this occur.
