IN NEW JERSEY THIS WATCH INCLUDES 5 COUNTIES

IN NORTHEAST NEW JERSEY

BERGEN ESSEX HUDSON PASSAIC UNION

IN NEW YORK THIS WATCH INCLUDES 11 COUNTIES

IN SOUTHEAST NEW YORK

Severe thunderstorms move through the area

Airport delays, power outages, woman struck and killed by lightning

(New York-WABC, July 28, 2006) -

A line of strong storms, packing damaging winds and heavy rain, moved through the Tri-State on Friday afternoon.

There are reports into the National Weather Service of a funnel cloud hitting the ground in Washington Township, Mercer County. The report came from a police officer on patrol in the area of Gordon and Sharon Roads in Washington Township.

Eyewitness News has learned that a 54-year-old woman was killed when she was hit by lightning on a golf course in Orange County.

Her golfing partner, another woman, was injured. They were reportedly struck by lightning in a shelter near the 15th hole.

Power Outages:

LIPA: 1,165 customers without power throughout Long Island.

Con Ed: 2,000 customers without power on Staten Island.

CT Light and Power: 3246 customers out.

PSE& G: Over 1,500 scattered throughout Bergen/Hudson/Passaic.

JCP& L: 500 scattered Middlesex/Somerset Counties.

Due to the weather, the Passaic County substation is down causing outages to 9,800 customers. Several businesses in downtown Passaic are without power.
