Driver of suspected stolen car, 57, hurt in crash

November 01, 2006

Town of Wallkill -- A 57-year-old man driving an allegedly stolen car crashed into a tree on Interstate 84 this morning while trying to flee police.

The crash left traffic on the westbound side of Interstate 84 badly backed up into Montgomery for much of the morning commute.

State police Capt. Marty Hansen said the driver, identified as Charles Delara, of Hyde Park, was stopped by a trooper on Route 9D in Fishkill, just south of Dutchess Stadium, around 6:30 a.m.

Delara got out of his car but the trooper ordered him to get back in. The driver complied, but then sped off, crossing the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge and continuing west on I-84 until he apparently lost control of the car, veered into the median and struck a tree.

Hansen said the man was taken to the Horton campus of Orange Regional Medical Center. There was no further word on his condition, but Hansen said he might be flown to Westchester Medical Center later today.

Charges against Delara are pending, Hansen said.
