RIT/FAST training

Recently our department aqquired a house to use for training, as the departments training officer I am trying to start out RIT training. Can I get some ideas as to what task should I accomplish first. We have done some breaching of walls from room to room but nothing indepth.

Start w/the basics, get some guidelines down on paper so all know how it will be called, operations, member requirements, and how to perform skills in a consistant manner every time. Best bet is to meet up with other Dept.'s and talk to whom is in charge of training for their FASTeams so if you have to operate together you know if your doing the same things. Also, know the agencies you will serve equipment in case they have different SCBA's then you, and discuss what they are looking for and how you plan to operate. Be proactive, prevent a incident before you may have to respond to it.

Drill wise, everything and anything will always do. The basics always need to be done, but in realistic application. Use wax paper on face pieces so they get a smoky like environment but you can have people observe what they are doing. Doing a hasty harness is difficult by feel if your not proficient, as well as using webbing and ropes for dragging. Feel the mood of the team, you don't have to kill them every drill but make them think and try to do a whole incident type drill. Not just give the scenario as they are already on-scene, let them gather equipment, give assignments, mitigate problems and then have a mayday go out.

You can also look at several RIT books/manuals out there that will give you good ideas and assist with SOG's. Keep in mind, most problems encountered are in commercial buildings, if you can find one to do training in that's great.

Another good idea is to mandate everyone on the team has firefighting experience and has taken FF Survival And FAST Operations. Very good classes.

good advice,the FTC is offering Firefighter survival almmost every Sat. Sign your firefighter up for the course. Just remember they have to have had FF1, or equivilant to get State Certificiation Its a great way to get your firefighter prepared

IM GLAD TO SEE FAST/RIT TEAMS ARE GROWNING IN THE FIRE SERVICE. THE BEST THING TO DO IS KEEP IT SIMPLE AT FIRST. GATHER YOUR MOST EXPIERENCED AND MOTIVATED GUYS AND GET THEM AND YOURSELF THROUGH THE RIGHT CLASSES AND THEM SOME. JUST REMEMBER SEARCH IS PROBALLY THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT IN FAST OPS SEARCH TILL YOU DROP. :wink:

don't waste the house, get an outside instructor experienced in teaching rit ops... if it's you who goes down it will be worth every penny

First, make sure every member of your team can search a 10x12 room with furnature in it, without missing closets, identifying windows and not missing the dummy. In total darkness, with no light, in a minuet. Sounds very easy but most can't do it.........

I am still confussed as to why you need FF survival to be on

the FAST TEAM. You should need it to be interior. Then you

Chris, your comment does make a lot of sense. Having FF Survival as a requirement for Interior FF Status may save your ass befroe the FAST can get to you.
