Hartsdale 1977 Helicopter Crash

9 posts in this topic

I was browsing through Hartsdale's website when I found two shots of a helicopter crash. It looked to be on a parkway, and the helicopter appears to be from a police agency. Does anyone know or remember anything about this incident?

Heres the links to the photos:

I believe that it was a Bell 47 (MASH style) helicopter being used by the predecessor of Metro North PD for a police patrol when it crashed on the BRP in Scarsdale or Greenburgh.

If I come across any more details, I'll post them!

It was indeed the "track patrol" operated by Penn Central to combat vandalism along its right of ways. One of the pontoons in the photo says "police patrol". It went down on the BRP just north of Fenimore Road in Scarsdale, and it appears photo 2 was taken from the Fenimore Road bridge. There were two crew members on the helicopter and I recall one was killed- the other I'm unsure of his fate. The FD members in the black turnout gear were Scarsdale members, and that must be Hartsdale in the silver gear.

Sometimes it's good to have us old farts still around.

Oh gee.....I was dispatching that night and sent both Hartsdale FD and Scarsdale FD along with the B-1, B-2 and Sgt. Helo was used to patrol the tracks for the railroad (I can't remember if it was Penn Central or Conrail at the time). I seem to recall that we requested Greenburgh CD light truck that night too.

Note also this incident took place just before 5pm

also the Lt age 33 who was on the chopper jumped free or was thrown free when the chopper was 20 feet of the ground and survived with only minor injuries he was transported to white plains hospital

The pilot who was killed in this incident was a decorated Vietnam Helicopter pilot who was awarded the bronze star for valor and the Distinguished Flying Cross and was only 27 years old
