Extreme Makeover Returns To Carmel

7 posts in this topic

Dear All,

It is hard to believe that it is almost a year since we were visited by Extreme Makeover. We have adapted well to our new home and the love contained in these walls is indescribable. Every day we wake up and realize how blessed we are.

Now, we may have a chance to pay it forward. There is a possibility that the team may be doing a project in our area once again. Our family is very excited about this possibility, and can't wait to possibly give back to our community.

So, we would like to invite you to a planning meeting on Saturday, March 17, at 11:30 am. I will send the place of the meeting as soon as I get the information.

Volunteers that will be needed:

Sign-in

Food, coffee, etc.

Clean-up

All Trades - Excavators, Trucking, Laborers, Masonry, Plumbing, Heating, Carpentry, Electricians, Painters, Drywall, Landscaping.

All materials needed as well.

Whatever you may be able to contribute will be appreciated.

If this build happens, it will be March 22 through March 28 with the heaviest amount of construction over 23, 24, 25, 26.

Let's hope they come to our area once again. Coming to NY for the all fifty states tour, how exciting, again.

Please pass this along to anyone that may be interested in volunteering.

Love and God Bless, Gina

Meeting Saturday at 1130

The Braveheart scene is now scheduled for approximately 11am on Friday morning.

Anyone wanting to be in the braveheart scene should arrive at the check in area by 10am. Anyone volunteering at the check in area should arrive by 8am. The show is looking to have at least 100 people there for the braveheart scene.

We've received lots of names for volunteers.

We are still looking for:

some restaurants/delis to donate some of the evening meals…at 530 and 1030.

some local massage therapists to donate their services on site.

Volunteers for the street crew.

Anyone wanting to donate food but is not able to cover a donation for 250 people, is welcome to donate whatever they'd like. Miscellaneous donations are great to provide food in between the main meals.

Thanks to everyone for all your help…

ABC's 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' goes to camp in Kent

By MICHAEL RISINIT

THE JOURNAL NEWS

(Original publication: March 24, 2007)

KENT — A touch of Hollywood knocked down an old laundry building yesterday at the Clearpool Education Center.

The destruction and upcoming rebuilding, courtesy of ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," will replace the dilapidated green structure with a new recreation center. The work - performed by the same Long Island company that redid a Somers home last year for the show - will help a single mom and her Albany-area family, future campers and the local community.

"It's going to benefit not just the kids from (Camp Heartland). It's a building that will serve a much broader spectrum," Clearpool Executive Director Bob Behr said yesterday as volunteers and construction workers swirled around the 350-acre campus.

Founded in 1901, Clearpool is an environmental education camp for disadvantaged children. The Kent facility will rent space this summer to Camp Heartland, a Minnesota-based nonprofit group that organizes summer programs for children and families affected by HIV and AIDS. Colonie, N.Y., resident Debbie Oatman, 43, has three adopted sons, two of whom are HIV-positive and have other health problems. A biological son, her youngest, and the third adopted brother have no special needs.

The four range from 9 to 20 years old.

Behr said some of the brothers have attended Heartland's Minnesota camp. But the 15-year-old, he said, was afraid to fly. This summer, the family will make the two-hour drive to Kent.

"Now, he finally gets this opportunity to go to camp for the first time in his life," Behr said.

The popular TV program is also redoing Oatman's home. The upstate-downstate project will air in May as the season finale.

Alure, the home-improvement company that is building the recreation center, began moving equipment onto the site Thursday. By yesterday, three colors dominated the landscape - the blue of the show's T-shirts donned by anyone working on the project, the brown of mud, and the white of everyone's hard hat.

Wearing both a T-shirt and a hard hat was James Arena of Somers. Arena, his wife, Gina, and their six daughters lost their 6-year-old son and brother, Jimmy, to a brain tumor in September 2005. "Extreme Makeover" rebuilt their home in April, both to lift their spirits and to remember Jimmy.

Arena said there was never a question about he and his wife volunteering at the Kent site, along with their six daughters and 8-month-old son, Michael. During the Somers project, Alure built a nursery for the then-expecting Gina Arena. She spent Thursday cooking ravioli, meatballs and sausages for the workers.

"There's no reason not to be here," James Arena said. "Pay it forward."

Yesterday slipped by while the production crew prepared for the show's trademark scene, known as "Braveheart." That's when host Ty Pennington and the project's builder, in this case Alure President Sal Ferro, lead a cheering crowd of workers onto the site. At Clearpool, that was a fast-paced walk down a hill near the frozen Clearpool Lake.

After a break for lunch, two excavators pulled up to the wooden building. A busted plastic window fronted the structure and broken steps led to two shabby screen doors. The excavators bit into the roof and ripped away dripping mouthfuls of shingles, insulation, plywood and two-by-fours. The action stopped periodically as executive producer Denise Cramsey set up Pennington's walk through the rubble and between the rumbling machines.

Ferro watched as his troops began demolishing the building. Cinder blocks for a new foundation were piled nearby, and a cement truck would eventually be waiting at the bottom of the camp's long driveway. Earlier, outside the dining hall, he said he was eager to get to work.

"It's about giving back to the community and showing goodwill - and our industry in a good light," he said.
