It depends on the dispatching agency. In Putnam County, part timers are hired off the civil service list but are not union (currently). I am not sure if Westchester or Dutchess hire part timers. Other agencies, such as Somers contract thier dispatching to a private company. somers uses Westchester EMS which does not use the civil service list.

You would have to contact the agencies in question to find out how they hire.

Dutchess hires part-timers - they are generally full-timers who have left for another job, but fully trained dispatchers whom the department wishes to hang on to help fill in for vacations, storm coverage, etc. They also hire hourly (up to 39 hrs/wk) dispatchers...these are hired off the civil service list and are eligible for pro-rated benefits based on hours worked. Hourly dispatchers sometimes become full-timers when slots open up.

Westchester doesn't hire part-timers.
