1 post in this topic

Flood of 2006 I was there

It rained for days and on June 26 all hell broke loose, I put in over 100 hours durning this disaster, It was good times and stressfull times mostly good LOL, I also learned alot of new things

June 26th I got the call to head down to the chapter that eveving because the water was coming and coming fast so we had to open up a shelter that endwell fire station, about 15 ended up staying the first nite, When news came on at 530 am , we learned things we getting worse and we were under a state of emergency and everything, Me and my partener didnt think i was gonna be able to get home cause most bridges were closed down but just by luck the bridge i need to get over was open and i was able to get home, I got 3 hours of sleep and headed back to the chapter, They opened up a shelter at the BU event cernter that day so i was down there working nite shift next 3 days, I made a firend there, He remembered me from the shelter at Endwell fire and every day while i was at the BU center we would talk, That was the best thing about doing that, I took sat-monday off went back to the chapter tuesday, by then we had volunteers from all over the country coming in and got 18 ERVs from all over to help us out, Tuesday and wed i was working with a guy from Washington state, On thrusday I was asked if i wanted to go out on the ERV to hand out supplies so i was put the the Boston ERV to do cleaning supplies and on friday i went out with them again, On sat and sunday i went with the guys from Macon, GA to give out food, All 4 days i was in Conklin the hardtest hit area of broome county, I couldnt beleive what i was seeing when i got out there it was so unbeleiveable,The sites, the smells, the people i were all nite to us thanking us calling us heroes, wanted to hug ya, shake ya hand, Some where covered head to toe in mud, crying, and telling us what they been thu, SOOO UNBELIVEABLE, I met alot of folks and made a few friends, I'm gonna miss them, I realised how damn lucky i am to be able to come home each day, seeing them lost homes and all breaks ya heart, I also realised how great this country is see all the folks come from all over to help us out, U dont really realise things untill it hits home and feel what others have been thu during hurricanes and all that, It was great being out there working with the FD, PD, EMS and Troops to help get this county back on its feet

Thanks for the ride Seattle, Boston and Macon, GA u guys were great to me I'll never forget this event
