Couple sue Sleepy Hollow, claim detective beat them

(Original publication: October 23, 2007)

A husband and wife who said they were beaten up by a Sleepy Hollow detective at the village police station a year ago have filed federal civil rights lawsuits against him, the village and police officials.

Misdemeanor charges, including resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration, are still pending in Greenburgh Town Court against the couple, Mario and Awilda Gomez. But the Tarrytown couple say they were the victims in the Oct. 17, 2006, incident.

"They almost killed this guy," said Francis Young, the lawyer representing Mario Gomez in his civil suit, filed in U.S. District Court in White Plains. "In 23 years of practice, I've never seen anything this egregious."

Gomez says in his suit that he was punched, kicked and shocked with a stun gun during a confrontation with Sleepy Hollow Detective Jose Quinoy.

In the weeks after the incident, a lawyer for Awilda Gomez said the fracas stemmed from the Gomezes' belief that Quinoy, 35, was romantically involved with their 22-year-old daughter.
