FDNY vs NYFD

8 posts in this topic

Does anybody know why New York City prefers to be called " Fire Dept. New York"? I have always been wondering why they have FDNY on their trucks instead of NYFD. If somebody has the asnwer, I'd appreciate it!

That was actually some pretty interesting information that I didnt know, I never knew it was the Metropolitan Fire Department and Police Department...but in the end of that article if you will, it states it perfectly, its the Fire Department of the City of New York which is why its F.D.N.Y. and not N.Y.F.D.

Also to the old New York City volunteer fire department was known as NYFD up until the organization of the paid department in 1865.

Also the urban legend...to prevent the cops(ESU) from stealing tools  and making the NYFD change into NYPD with just a dash of paint!!!
