Yonkers detention officer fired over investigation

(Original publication: November 16, 2007)

YONKERS - A 49-year-old Yonkers detention officer with 19 years on the job was terminated because of his refusal to answer police questions in connection with an investigation, authorities confirmed yesterday.

Yonkers police Capt. Robert Itzla, commander of the police department's Internal Affairs Unit, confirmed to The Journal News that detention officer, Carl Amato was fired from the force Wednesday.

Itzla declined to say what investigation Amato was being questioned about when he declined to answer questions.

"It is an ongoing investigation," Itzla said.

Amato, who has not been charged with a crime, is not a police officer. He works in the Yonkers City jail on Alexander Street as a detention officer. Detention officers, who are part of the police department, are responsible for picking up prisoners from the county jail and transporting them back to the Yonkers police Alexander Street jail and to court.

Detention officers carry firearms, like police officers.

Ouch...19 years! Sorry, can't say anymore right now!
