Poughkeepsie firefighters are moving to new base

Building refitted to accommodate female member

By Michael Valkys

Poughkeepsie Journal

Poughkeepsie firefighters today will move into the city's new public safety building now that renovations designed to give the department's lone female member more privacy are complete.

The $8.5 million building along the 500 block of Main Street opened in September, but had to undergo subsequent minor renovations to give firefighter Maureen Graham a separate bunk area.

"There were concerns over privacy going in and out'' of the complex's living space, Chief Kenneth Boyd said.

He said a new door was added and a wall raised to give Graham a sleeping space separate from her male colleagues.
