Vernon police officer found dead in home

VERNON NJ — A Vernon Police officer has died from a single gunshot wound. According to the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office, Vernon Township police responded to a 911 call at the residence of Vernon Police Sgt. Robert Walsh shortly after 11 p.m. Thursday. Walsh, who was off duty, was found in an upstairs bedroom and was unresponsive. It was determined that Walsh sustained a single gunshot wound. A handgun was recovered at the scene. Walsh was pronounced dead at the scene. A medical examination has been scheduled for later today. No foul play is suspected and no other details were available. The investigation is being conducted by the New Jersey State Police, the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Vernon Township Police Department.
