New Traffic Law for N.Y. Emergency Scenes

8 posts in this topic

Effective November 1, 2004 an addendum was added to the "Speed not reasonable or prudent" section to include vehicles passing, at a high or hazardous speed, stopped emergency vehicles at emergency scenes displaying active red, white or combination emergency lights. Officers can now issue summons under a specific sub-section dealing with this specific situation making prosecution of the section more successful.

Only problem is how does the officer chase the guy down when he is on an emergency scene?

A slick setup would be to have several guys running barriers for the scene and then beyond the scene have an officer in a chase car ready to take down anyone blasting through at unreasonable speeds.

Nice thought. Difficult to get personnel to go after those whom do it. But just like every other law, no one cares until they get caught and they will only do it again.

Having a chase car a bit down the road is a good idea, or just calling the vehicle tag information (if any) over the radio and have another unit respond would work, too.

does this include when you cross the double yellows and come back across the road to back the rig in. I know people who chased after cars in the firetruck that didn't yield to the truck when it was trying to back in.

Does this apply to backing the rig in quarters? We have a constant problem of people driving past us as we back our units in to quarters, at all 3 houses!
