Bob Brooks Sr., the Montgomery firefighter who collapsed at a training exercise Saturday, died today.

Officials said Brooks, 42, died of a catastrophic brain aneurysm. The husband and father of five, who moved to Montgomery from Long Island in the past year, had been a member of the Montgomery Fire Department since September.

"It's really difficult thing to lose someone so young and so full of promise," said Jim Ferguson, Montgomery's fire chief.

Ferguson said the department is grieving alongside Brooks' widow, and her five children.

"We spent a lot of time with the family and we are going to be here to help them take care of everything they need," Ferguson said.

"We are going to see this thing through to the end," he added. "We're going to make sure we do the right thing for the family, and make a good showing for Bob and everything he stood for."

Ferguson said the department will be setting up a relief fund to help Brooks' devastated family.

Brooks had been in grave condition at the Horton Campus of Orange Regional Medical Center since Saturday. He died this morning.

Memorial services for Brooks are planned later this week.

Firefighter laid to rest

Hundreds of firefighters from across the Hudson Valley yesterday paid their respects to Robert Brooks, Sr., the Montgomery fireman who died last Monday of a brain aneurysm during training at the Orange County Fire Training Center.

Brooks, 42, is survived by his wife, Shannon, and their five children.

Brooks, who moved his family north from Long Island within the last year, was eulogized by family, friends, clergy and fellow firematics officials.

Orange County Executive Edward Diana said Brooks epitomized the definition of volunteerism. “This man dedicated his life to firematics and volunteerism and it’s just a tragic event for his family,’ he said.

Orange County Emergency Services Commissioner Walter Koury was saddened by Firefighter Brooks’ death. “It brings to mind and makes real for everyone the hazards that are out there and how a simple drill can turn into tragedy for all of us,†he said.

Burial was at Brick Church Cemetery in Montgomery.
