That’s how many people were living in New York on April 1, 2010, according to the U.S. Census Bureau – a 2.1 percent increase over the last decade.

But while New York’s population is growing, it’s not increasing as quickly as nearly every other state – meaning that, in 2013, New York will have two fewer congressional seats (27 vs. 29) than in the previous decade.

Increase since 2000: 9.7 %
