As many as 57 firefighter jobs could be eliminated because of city budget cutbacks — decimating gains in diversity, firefighters say, and jeopardizing safety.

"People are in a panic, literally," said firefighter and Monroe County legislator Willie Lightfoot.

That is the reaction Mayor Thomas Richards feared, and the pushback that came Tuesday was as he expected.

Nothing is decided, or even proposed at this point. Cuts to the Fire Department are among several scenarios being considered as Richards looks to close a $46 million shortfall in the 2011-12 budget....
