Emergency communications to improve dramatically in Sullivan County

MONTICELLO – Sullivan County Emergency Services Commissioner Richard Martinkovic has presented a multi-million plan to significantly upgrade the county’s emergency communications.

“We would try to whittle some of that cost down through grants. We have a $1.2 million grant from the state already for interoperability. We have another $400,000 from selling some of our frequencies to cell phone carriers,”

The county ultimately would go from five to eight cell tower sites, increase the height of the towers to 180 feet from roughly 90 feet, and upgrade equipment in the 911 Center.

These improvements are for EMS, fire, police and public works, but also would provide the opportunity for private wireless companies to lease space on the towers and improve service.

the county's system is archaic. The various emergency agencies cannot talk to each other, and coverage is spotty in many parts of the county.

I think it is going to be a VHF system due to the distances they are dealing with there.
