Yonkers disabled firefighters on hook for $2.2 million

4 posts in this topic

Was it just an eyeshade accounting error, or something more nefarious?

Welcome to Yonkers where you cant follow the money without a treasure map and an X that marks the spot a bottomless rabbit hole.

The latest money mystery involves the citys contention that as many as 60 former firefighters who retired on disability have been receiving lucrative overpayments in pension benefits, totaling $2.2 million going back to 2009.

How this happened is now the subject of a probe by the city Inspector General Brendan J. McGrath.

Can the employer legally ask for the money back if it's their mistake, or is it the employee's responsibility to report it?

Not if they were legally entitled to it, or if this was a long standing department procedure. If the guy is disabled, he's getting shafted out of the ability to get that pay anyways.
