Mount Vernon mayor asks council to restore salary funding for 5 new firefighters

Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas met with the city council and fire department about funding the salaries of five new firefighters. He says there is money available in the general fund and it would not impact taxpayers.

Last year, five firefighter positions were defunded and the hiring process delayed when a decreased budget was passed.

Thomas urged the council to act fast or the city may not be eligible to receive new firefighters from the training academy until January 2017.
