Georgia Firefighter Dies On Duty

Georgia firefighter died from a heart attack while on duty early Thursday morning.

The U.S. Fire Administration Memorial Data Base is reporting that Thomas A. Hurlbert, 54, who was returning from multiple storm-related calls with the Rockdale County Fire Department in Conyers, Ga., suffered a heart attack as he was driving the apparatus.

A Rockdale County spokesperson said details and cause of death would not be released until more information became available. However, USFA lists Hurlbert’s cause of death as a heart attack from stress/overexertion.

Hurlbert had been working multiple calls caused by the remnants of Tropical Storm Cindy. USFA reported that “other firefighters in the apparatus rendered aid, but despite all efforts, resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.â€

One area news report called Hurlbert a veteran firefighter, but his years of service could not be verified in time for this article.

Hurlbert’s death is the 64th on-duty death this year.
