STONY POINT — A construction workers suffered serious injuries this morning and was airlifted to the Westchester Medical Center, police said.

The worker was hit by an excavating machine just before police received an 911 call at 11:04 a.m., Lt. Peter Quinn said. The man was working on property on Captain Faldermeyer Drive.

The extent of the man's injuries were not known as detectives were still investigating. No further details were available as police and emergency personnel were still at the scene.

"We call for a helicopter STAT-Flight only when it's extremely serious," Quinn said. "He wasn't conscious. His condition was serious."

Emergency personnel established a landing zone for the medical helicopter at the North Rockland High School soccer fields, Quinn said. The helicopter took the man to the Westchester Medical Center.

Stony Point police were assisted by the Haverstraw town officers, the Stony Point Fire Department and ambulance corps and the Rockland Paramedic Services. The Sheriff's Department Bureau of Criminal Investigation also responded to collect evidence.

Quinn said there was every indication the man was hurt in an accident.

Captain Faldermeyer Drive, a residential area in town, is named after a town resident who was killed during the Vietnam War.

STONY POINT — A 33-year-old construction worker died this afternoon about an hour after being slammed by a construction vehicle excavating outside a Captain Faldermeyer Drive house, police said.

Thomas Collins of Garnerville was hit by an excavator bucket and pinned to the side of the house at about 11 a.m., Lt. Brian Moore said this afternoon.

"They were excavating and the machine was digging up dirt and rotating back and forth on its tracks when the bucket hit him," Moore said. "He was temporarily pinned against the side of the house."

Collins, who was married, lost consciousness and was considered critical when emergency medical personnel flew him by helicopter to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, police said.

He died from his injuries at 12:04 p.m. at the medical center, Moore said.
