  1. This is the second time that we've been hit in Yonkers - both times resulted in an arrest. We were hit once in White Plains too but unfortunately there was no arrest in that case.

There have been several reported incidents involving airplanes over the past year in/around Westchester. A few near the airport and other isolated cases elsewhere. The problem is nearly epidemic in the industry. The Philadelphia/Baltimore area has been getting inundated with these incidents thanks to exceptionally bright laser "toys" being sold on the Jersey Shore and in Ocean City, MD.

That heli is a awesome tool, it can find a nedle in a haystack from 2000 feet up! I recall listening to the first Yonkers incident, awesome how they caugh this guy. As the poster stated, it is huge issue getting worse.

  2. Well from what I read, this is sort of a pointless law. It is saying that apparatus and chiefs can now you a blue light on the backs of there vehicles. Not sure how this is a good thing since really any flashing light will do the job. I think that if you don't see that rig with the current red and white pattern then adding a blue is not gonna change anything. Proper rig placement on the road is what saves lives, not a blue light. Plus who wants a blue light anyway?

You are 100% correct about rig placement, and that is very important, but, the blue flashing lights make a big difference, especially when moving. It makes the vehicle much more pronounced and it stands out much clearer and further away, letting those every few people, was we all know, move to the side. It makes no difference what color for the rest of the lamebrains because they would not move no matter what color the lights were.

  3. The county will be going with blue crown vics (different color blue than the one in the photo) with all white doors. The car in the photo is similar to the new cars, but not exactly what they will be getting.

I think this new scheme is horrible! The current scheme is just fine. There must be a reason for the change. I think the white is much better for visibility and safety, and, I think the orange "County" on the blue back door is ugly, please change that, at least. I would think that getting cars other than all white, or all 1 color, are probably more expensive too.

  4. Man I gotta say, that is one hodgepodge fleet of apparatus, no wonder they're getting a quarter-million for a new rig. I couldn't help but notice how poorly equiped each rig also appears to be; the compartment photos remind me of my old department in the years before we started getting serious about putting the right equipment on board.

I agree about the hose beds, and it appears they are not carrying enough hose to comply with standards.

Anybody notice the sticker in the window of E595? Looks like an old IAFF sticker?

At any rate, Gillibrand is gettting/or got them a million for their EOC. Just remember with politicians, $$ to the constituency equals votes. I think they call it "pork", but definately NOT in this case.

And if any of the KJ members read this thread, if it is true as Alpine has said that you guys are showing up miles outside of your jurisdiction to "help out", in the fire service we call it FREELANCING. It is extremely dangerous, no matter how well intentioned you might be, and it should stop.

Best of luck with your new fire truck.

PS: I love the free-standing water cooler in the back of the rescue. Great place to gather around after a job and shoot the proverbial. Gives the job a white-collar kinda feel no?

Free lancing, isn't that what that department down in Rockland was doing, the ones who created their own department with a makeshift truck and old equipment, LOL.

  5. I don't think departments can/should self dispatch outside their district even if they get the call on their house phone. Self-dispatching is different then jumping calls, which I believe aviator70 is referring to

I hadn't heard of KJ before this and did some reading on their Wiki page. Very interesting place! From the wiki page it looks like their department will continue to grow, assuming it parallels their population growth

You are correct in my thinking. Kiryas Joel likes to show up on scenes well outside their jurisdiction without being requested or asked for. They are infamous for doing this at auto accidents and have been known to respond to jurisdictions well outside their jurisdiction even if that department is operating with its own manpower and equipment and not using any mutual aid at all.

  6. Why do you say "self dispatch" like it is a bad, or uncommon thing? There are multiple fire departments in Orange County that have their own self dispatch. They do the right thing and respond to everything that they are dispatched to. 99% of their calls come through 7-digit lines to their own dispatch center, which I believe is KJ EMS. Then they call out to OC911 when responding who in turn dispatched the proper FD if it is out side the Village of KJ. Yeah they have a funny accent on the radio, and sometimes are hard to under stand, but every time I hear them on the radio it sounds no worse then the rest of the cluster**** that is emergency communications in Orange County.

I am not talking about that kind of self-dispatch. I am talking about when they show up on their own with no request 30 miles away from their jurisdiction to "help out."

  7. Lately, I've been seeing more and more Emergency Services vehicles get chevrons put on. I know the county police and some EMS agencies have chevrons but not sure about fire depts.

I believe they are required by law on firetrucks and ambulances now, correct?
