In the early 80's when McDonalds went to the new style buildings, they started using truss const. I was told in classes that this type (lightweight truss) was now refered to as Mcdonalds construction. So 30 yrs goes by and firefighters have to die in a lightweight building. It has been told to me that the Fire Dept knew not to send members ONTO the roof of the fire building (McDonalds) because of the truss construction, but sent members UNDER the roof into the building. The roof did what it was expected to do and members died. We have to be smarter than this.
As a side note it has also been passed down to me that McDonalds does not carry fire insurance on their buildings. Dont know how true that is but if it is, they already know it is a disposable piece of property, and the only ones who care about saving anything will be us, treat it like a car fire, no life hazard, no reason to get anyone hurt for something that wont be recognizable by the end of the week.

This might sould a little nieve but let'em burn. Carmel fire department had a tough fire at a Wedney's. Most of these buildings are put together rather quickly with truss roofs and other simple construction techniques. But anyway they leveled the rest of the building and placed a new one up no longer then 6 months from when it happened. Of coarse if its possible try to put them out but its not worth risking ur own or anyone elses life over.

Not sure exactly how the liability part works. You say "I have enough to pay for my lost property," But I am sure that state laws would require you to have a minimum amount of liability insurance (or escrow or reserved funds).

The implication of a company like McDonald's being self insured means that they consider their properties disposable cuold not be further from the truth. A company of that size with that much money simply does some math and comes up with a decision. The logic goes like this for a hypothetical company.
    1. Out of 1000 properties, yearly on average, 1 will be a total loss, 7 will suffer severe fire damage, 32 will have minor fires with damage under $5000, If the company can pay for this average plus an extra percentage for a high loss year they go to step 2.
    2. Can they afford a huge lawsuit which occurs every 50 years? If yes, and the annual cost is cheaper than an insurance company charges then self insurance is a viable choice.
I presented a simplified version with only two criteria, but your insurance goes through a similar process to determine yor insurance rate. It's called insurance underwriting.
Neither the insurance company nor the self insured company considers their properties disposable. They are both just playing the odds.

The new rig is almost the exact same length as the one it is replacing. The front and rear bumpers were shortened to fit it in the bay. It looks short due to the addition of an actual crew compartment which seats four firefighters behind the driver and officer. This is one of the main advantages of this vehicle as three of our four current rigs (R-26, E-161 and U-12) can only seat four or fewer personel each. The walk-thru area of the current rig was basically a waste of space. The new box will have a pull-out tray in the rear compartment and a transverse slider at the front end of the box. Everything on the current truck will fit on the new rig.

  13. x635 liked a post in a topic by LTNRFD in County Aviation: Why did it take so long to get established?
30 or so years ago at one of the County Fire Control meeting it was announced that there was 1 and maybe 2 Bell type helicopters delivered and sitting at the County Airport. They were army surplus and were given to the County. At the time the County Police did not exist. There was the Parkway Police and the County Sheriff. The story goes that the Parkway P.D. was to get the helicopter(s) for patrolling the parkways, but the Sheriff put claimed to the helicopter(s) for investigating crimes. It was said that there was such a rift between the two police agencies that the County Exec returned the copter(s) to the Government.

The same happened to me, its just popularity contest and a way for people to get even on post they dont like. I dont see any real purpose for it, but whatever, it is what it is.

At the risk of getting a few malicious negatives (like the ones I got when someone actually looked me up and then negatively rated a thread that I had started LAST YEAR), not that I care too much anyway, I'd like to come out and say that I think the whole membership rating system is nothing more than a popularity contest that contributes nothing to the board. The whole point to the board is to debate the issues; if you agree and would be inclined to rate a post or thread positive, you don't have to say anything other than "I agree." Conversely, if you disagree, and would be inclined to rate it negatively, then it just seems better to debate the issue.

Psssst..... Tommy, you're at minus 9! Lay low for a while, that whole Mobile Life thread killed you. When you asked the question, I thought no one was rating you, and I was going to offer to throw a negative your way every once in a while.... now I see that everyone else did before I could.

I tend to be very traditional when it comes to apparatus paint jobs. This is a place where I make an exception because of how well I've been received. Always helps to have old family friends who are captains, and a chief who is a D-911 dispatcher(THANX KENNY!!!)
Yup, you guessed it, Rombout. So here we go, 62-2, 11, 12, 45 and the new 55 a BEAST of a rig.

And of course this behemoth..I LIKE IT!!!

And so, I bid adeiu to the Caddy Creme gang, knocked on my aunts door and nobody was home, or they heard I was coming and hid. Ran to Carmel to see some friends and headed on home. Not bad, 20 plus rigs in 4 hours. If there is anyone in the OC of NY, or up in Dutchess, or Westchester, or Putnam who wants me to come out. Let me know. I'll check my schedule and we'll work something out. As always, Enjoy!!!

So, I got a bit more time to kill and figured I'd hit Middletown. I've gone out drinking at a bar down the block from the main house enough times and promised myself I'd get over there eventually. After explaining who I was and that I was shooting pix not only for my personal collection, but to put up on this site(Shameless Plug, I know) out they came for me. Here's Engine 1, 1994 Pierce.

    JACKPOT!!!! Truck 1, 1989 Simon.LTI Tiller!!!

    Engine 2, Spartan RD Murray
    I like the White/Orange..

Truck 3, 112 foot Pierce Platform. I liked the little step that comes out when you open the door, nice touch.

Engine 6, 2009 KME. I looked at this at the Expo last year, but would rather get it out in the sun. Not my greatest shot, but I'm not a perfectionist when it comes to this stuff.

Engines 4 and 5, once again, not the greatest angles, and I have to figure out what setting on this new camera works best for rigs. I may even bring out the old one just to help out.

Next stop, two exits over the Newburgh/Beacon Bridge..

So after a nearly three hour ride from JFK to the Chateau(DAMN YOU NYC TRANSIT!!!) I spent Saturday giving the tour to the Lake Carmel Explorers. The least I can do for the department that got me my start in the fire service 23 years ago. It was then up to the special lady friends house, and upon awakening on a beautiful Sunday, what more can I do since I'm alone in the house?? You got it, out and about I go!!!
First stop, Port Jervis Engine 4, a 1999 ALF with a 54 foot Squrt. I will say this about the Port, they are quite colorful..

Next up, Engine 2, a 2007 KME Rescue Pumper. Turns out they had a job right across the street earlier Sunday AM.

    Rescue 823 1994 Simon/Saulsbury

Engine 5, 2005 Seagrave. I looked at this and started channeling Joe Pesci, the Metallic Mint Green...

Next time I get the ladder, Engine 1 and Engine 6.
Drove over the bridge into PA to seek out Matamoras and Westfall. Stopped at Westfall first.
Engine 39-390, I wanna say late 90's Pierce. Jeeper can fill in the details I hope.

Tanker 39, Big Friend. I didn't get specifics. Jeeper, you're up pal!!!

Headed back down Pennsylvania Avenue past the Turkey Hill(GREAT subs and Orange Iced Tea!!!) and down to Matamoras.
    Rescue 32, 2000 International with a Rescue 1 body

Tower 321 2002?? Pierce with an 85 foot platform.

    Next stop, Middletown!!

I love driving, and despise flying. I will drive till my feet blister and hands callous on the wheel. I also don't look out for red light cameras when driving around Lancaster, CA. So I got caught and had to pay the ticket. Being slightly young and single and somewhat care free, and tired of getting the online and over the phone runaround from the LA County Superior Court system, I decided the best thing to do was go out there and pay the rassum frassum ticket. So, everybody's favorite Supervising Dispatcher flew out St. Patricks Day to the warm and lovely land of LA LA. Hopped in a nice rental(09 Chevy Cobalt, I WANT ONE!!!) and went to pay my fine. But wait, as I cruise into Lancaster, I also spy LA County FS 129. I had been here before on my last trip, but light was crappy and I only whacked out a couple of shots before it went to complete poop. Not this time. $446 later, just for the ticket, and here we go. Engine and Haz Mat 129 and Engine 329. I forget if 129 or the "3 Car" takes the Haz Mat. Both Engines are 2006 KME's and the Haz Mat is also a 2007 or 8 KME.

Ran further out back and Copter 16 was hanging around for the day. They have a copter here 24/7, I forget if it's an air squad, or just for firefighting duty.

I lucked out, as Quint 24 was finishing up some maintenance at the shops as well. This complex is pretty big actually. It's a fire station, training center, helispot, shops, and storage area for spares and reserve rigs.

Ran around back and got Water Tender 136.

Next stop, my second slice of the Orange..

FireMedic: The proposal is nothing new and just another scam. It is the same garbage this guy has been proposing since the day he magically returned as Chief in 2002.
He has had one agenda and one goal as Chief.......get rid of the City Fire Fighters in his Station and give jobs to himself and his handful of faithful minions.
From unlawful transfers, to the barricading of apparatus from entering the building, to the attempted installation of illegal surveillance cameras in crew quarters, his entire tenure has been consumed with every conceivable attempt to harass the career staff working in his Station.
Anyone from Stamford is well versed with this personality and his behavior and actions should make any Firefighter blush with embarrassment.

It will not bankrupt the country contrary to what you maintain; were you aware that over 37 million children have no medical coverage or are under insured? What about the minority of those who don't qualify and have no insurance? Are they supposed to get sick and die?
As I said before, we already have socialized medicine in this country. People then said it was the beginning of the end for the country and it would bankrupt us and it was part of a plan to socialize America. Surprise, it didn't happen. its going to be the same with this legislation; finally people who get sick won't have to worry about losing everything they have worked for their entire lives.
As i mentioned earlier, if they are worried about cost; eliminate pork barrel spending and cut back on our overseas ventures; that'll be a good start. Either way I think the bill is going to help a lot more people then hurt them.
  24. x635 liked a post in a topic by gamewell45 in Health Care passes.
I got news for you; almost everything in this country is socialistic; anything that is provided by the government is socialistic in nature; schools, sanitation, police, fire, Highway department, and the list goes on and on. Plus we've had socialized medicine since the inception of Medicare/Medicaid. So this is nothing new; just an expansion of a program or concept that's been in existence for decades; I may not like everything in the bill, but the fact of the matter is that it will help millions of men, women and children who have absolutely no medical coverage at all.
Furthermore, I think this is going to help those who can't afford medical insurance or those who are under insured. Just tonight, we had a rescue call and the woman there thought she might be having a pulmonary embolism. She RMA'd because she had no medical insurance and couldn't afford the ambulance and instead had one of her relatives drive her to the hospital. I hope she made it; if she had coverage, she could have gone in the ambulance with a medic. I'm sure some of you in EMS may have seen similar situations on rescue calls.
Of course its going to cost money; but if the government cuts out these so-called "pork barrel" projects and scales back on other affairs that we conduct around the world, that's a good start to help fund it.
  25. x635 liked a post in a topic by sr71 in Health Care passes.
This just made my day even worse.....this whole thing is a socialistic mess, I really hope it doesn't stick around on the books for too long.
