  1. That's why I posted the thread. We want to do it right and hearing added input is invaluable when building this enhanced service level. The BMFD provides EMS for the village already drawing EMS members from the FD ranks. There is already an EMS mindset in the department. We've been clear that the apparatus follows the ambulance to the scene. That no non-EMS trained personnel are to enter the premesis without orders. Our primary reason to roll is to provide lift assist and get it there early rather than waiting an additional 10 minutes for it to arrive. Most of the time we are returned or do not respond at all. Apparatus placement at the scene provides a block for patient loading. It's going to require some work but I believe it's a workable program and has quite a bit of positive PR potential. Granted there is always the risk of a PR nightmare, but we're mitigating that as much as we can. Thanksto everyone, so far for their input.
  2. For lift assistance and traffic control on scene.
  3. Apparently they've looked at the trickiest hills with the KME rep and driven them in a TL and are comfortable. Although we know there will be a learning curve. Thanks for you best wishes....
  4. Adversus Incendia, Semper Paratus = Against Fire, Ever Ready Adversus Incendia, Nulli Secundi = Against Fire, Second to none "Ladder 40 We look down on everybody":poke: Future TL40- It might be white, but it's huge! :yikes:
  5. BMFD members respond to the FH with the exception of the Chiefs and an occasional Deputy Chief. Generally no personal gear in POV's but some do. When a person is identified as a problem (usually a younger/newer member) the line officers tune them up. Certain Fire Police units cover the route, scene, and FH in their POV's. EMS Captain (an EMT) responds to westside daytime calls, sometimes and EMT's will be redirected to the scene to reduce response time on occasion.
  6. Actually, I'm not with the Ladder Co. in the BMFD so I'm not privy to the decision making that went into it. But I do know that the kicked that question around quite a bit before deciding to go with a TL. I believe safety for the members a major consideration. Also versatility of TL ops and proximity of the Ossining stick sealed the deal.
  7. I think it has something to do with testosterone.... :workout: Actually the salesmen do a great job of up selling the need. It is a pretty compelling argument for a platform, but eventually we'll be fresh out of straight sticks in the area. Long term I'd like to see a straight stick "Quint" out of the west side in Briarcliff at some point. Truth be told re-combining with Archville and putting a "Quint" there would be heaven on earth. But I don't think we'll see something like that happen too soon. DC
  8. I looked at the trivia thread and saw a question about a fire in Mt. Vernon in the '70's on S4th. and W1st. On the Fourth Ave side you had Fanny Farmer, they had just loaded in their Easter candy, then a jewlry store, then the Bee Hive. On the First St. side you had a small restaurant (point of origin) and PM's Billards above. As the fire got going the pool tables were dropping through the floors to the basement. On top of the buildings there were two bill boards. I had suggested to the Benevolents Assoc and the Members Assoc. that they rent them to extoll the benefits and virtues of a volunteer FD. In hind sight I'm glad they didn't listen because a news photo was taken from the top of the Fiske bldg. looking down at the fire. There were two plumes of smoke billowing up and you could read the signs perfectly. Whew...I believe a copy of that pic ended up in Firehouse magazine. Ahhh, those were the days! DC
  9. The last I heard things are moving forward nicely with TL40. I've heard, but will check details, maybe a springtime delivery. It will be white, but with a red stripe. That will make 5 of 8 rigs in BMFD with redness (53B1&2, E92, R37, and future TL40). We just had the cab of E93 re-striped and added a colored maltise to the front doors with Engine 93 in goldleaf on the crewcab doors. We decided to put a 4" white reflective stripe on the rig. We think it came out great. Check it out and let us know. Traditionally Briarcliff's rigs have been all white but recently there has been a push towards incorporating red. E94 will be replaced shortly and will probably have a red stripe so E 93 and Patrol 16 (antique) will end up the last of the all white rigs in the department. Personally I hope we reconsider the striping for 94 and go all white. It's unique and is NFPA compliant. E94 replacement will be in '05-'06 municipal budget. Target Mfg. is Seagrave - look for a late '06 to mid '07 delivery. That will make the current E94, 26 years old. As for TL40 we've been thinking of slogans: I like - "TL40 - We look down on everybody" I've heard "TL40 - It might be white, but it's huge!" :yikes: DC
  10. I took a ride in a Fairview engine a couple of years back that had just been delivered. It had headsets in all positions. All had mics, only the driver and officer had radio b'cast capability. The driver could unplug from the cab and plug into the pump panel on the scene. E93 in Briarcliff had headsets when the rig was new but have since been disconnected. We still have 'em and think, sometimes, that we might reinstall them. Many people don't like them but I personally think they're useful for intra-rig comms. We've been looking at an adapter to connect the drivers portable to a headset for on-scene comms.

  12. My name is Doug Cacciola, I signed up after the tanker fire earlier in the month in Briarcliff. I'm the current Captain of the Briarcliff Fire Company. The e in my screen name is for "empty" - Not my head! - I ran an ambulance out of fuel on the SMRP returning from a transport to Albany a few years back. So Doug-E was bestowed as a result. Maybe it is my head... #-o I'm involved in the fire service for 31 years. '73 - '90 a volunteer with the FDMV. (Those were the days 8) )Former Captain of Eng. Co. 6, '76 to '77. With the BMFD since '94. Between '90 and '94 I had no FD affiliation as the volunteer service was phased out in Mt. V. PDT_Armataz_25 I always lose hours on this site. Tons of good stuff. By the way, I have pictures of all BMFD apparatus. I'll send it on shortly. "Go slow; stay low"
