  1. I know of some departments that respond RLS to stand by cverage and I don't know why. I certainly don't think any reasonable person could say that it was a true emergency. But probably half the calls we respond to aren't true emergencies that wuld require or warrent RLS. Questionable insurance filings aside, if you blow through a red light responding to a stand by, you should be ticketed.
  2. On the evening of November 10th, 1918, General John J. Pershing – overall commander of the American Expeditionary Force in France – issued out his orders for the next day. They were for continued and unrelenting attack throughout the American sector of the line. Though the announcement had already been made to all units that a Cease Fire was to take effect at 11:00 am that following day, few had faith in its realities; General Pershing included. History tells us, however, that on that momentous day – at the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month – the guns did indeed fall silent for the first time in four years and four months. With that general armistice of hostilities, the First World War effectively drew to a conclusion. It had cost some 13 million lives, the greatest tragedy the world had yet seen, and it made a permanent mark on the generation that had experienced it. In 1938, Armistice Day, as it was then called, became an official U.S. National holiday. However, the 11th of November had been traditionally honored the world over ever since the first anniversary of peace following the war in 1919, and recognized by our Federal Government as early as 1925. It was the fashion in those days that at 11:00 am, no matter where you were, everything would cease at that hour for one fill minute of silence, when everyone’s thoughts would turn to the sacrifices made by our men overseas during the ‘Great War’. All traffic lights in cities would go red; telephones would stop ringing; radio stations would fall silent. For that minute at least, once a year we all came together as a nation to remember. 3. Amazing that you were able to get a picture in September. It Finally was delivered on 11/1. It certainly is not the Pierce that we're accustomed to.
  4. I don't know about district policies, but for myself, I will buy "Made in America" over foreign sourced whenever possible. This is especially true when I buy tools. It makes sense to me to pay twice as much for USA rather than China, etc and end up having to replace it often.
  5. I had often wondered why they were there after hearing them go to 3rd and 4th dispatches for most of the calls that I heard. Did they ever look at seperating the fire district and ambulance? I know of a department upstate that did that to some success. That was mostly so they could bill for services though rather than a manpower issue.
  6. Winona Lake was responding to the mva (originally dispatched as head-on with entrapment) when Air Guard was dispatched to City of Newburgh. The accident was on 17K @ the Air Guard entrance. They came up on it and remained on scene as Winona Lake arrived about 1 minute later. It was actually 3 vehicles, no head on, no entrapment. Two were transported BLS to St Lukes.
  7. Anything would be better than our last build where the chiefs were given almost zero input and some old guys who haven't seen a fire or been on any apparatus in God knows how long were the ones to write the specs. We (eventually) will be getting a lot of stuff we don't need and some stuff we do need in a nearly un-workable package.
  8. From the governor down, the highest (state) goverment officials operate "contrary to state law" , not to mention the state and US constitution. Do you honestly think they care about whether or not a particular ambulance in their prince's parade has the proper piece of paper?
  9. T/Newburgh PO Cadden's son, Sean, has luekemia. there will be a bone marrow donor drive at the Dan Leghorn Engine Co (Orange Lake). http://www.recordonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20140904/NEWS/140909922&cid=mostclicked
  10. Not to get too far off topic, but I don't know how they can sell that stuff. To me it seems like they are inviting a lawsuit. I predominately work with Gas Tite branded CSST and my supplier won't sell it unless you show your certification card. You have to take a class from the mfr's rep. I know with natural gas the aging infrastructure is a significant problem. In my work however, it is mostly Johnny Fix It that causes the problems. I'm surprised that more people do not blow themselves up.

  12. I too have personally seen this and just do not understand. The nearest level 2 is 20 minutes away. I have seen EMS crews wait 10 minutes for the helo. By the time the pt is transferred and off the ground, they could have been to the Level 2. By air, the level 1 is 20 minutes, 40 by ground. So my question is, is the pt better served by waiting 20 minutes to be flown for 20 to a level 1 (total 40 minutes to ER) or diven for 20 to a level 2? The best is when the EMS crew waits for the helo, transfers the pt, and then flown to the level 2. I think it may save time IF the helo is on the ground, close to the scene, when the pt is ready for transport and care can readily be turned over. Other than that, you're waisting time.
  13. I heard there will soon be a wet down for Dan Leghorn's (Orange Lake) KME. If it can remain in service long enough, Winona Lake's KME is now supposed to be delivered in September after multiple delays.
  14. I always felt it was a permanent solution to a temporary problem. However, for those in that dark place, the problems don't seem so temporary. I don't condone it but I can understand it.
  15. Happy Birthday
  16. I was, for a while, unable to view the forums from my android phone but that seems to have resolved.
  17. Does anyone here have an individual membership to NFPA? Do you still have it? Did/have you found it worth it? What has been your experiance been?
  18. Same here. Sometimes they don't understand. Most of the time they just don't care. As long as SOMEONE shows up when they call 911. Not a heated battle. I personally don't care. Some people have made firefighting a career choice, some haven't. Everyone for different reasons. I learned long ago that just because you do something for a living, doesn't really mean you can do the job. I'm just tired of those that think that because they get paid to do it, they are the only ones that can do it right. Completely agree. I have been an advocate of more selective "hiring" for years.
  19. About getting paid...? I can't tell you how many times people (general public civilian type) didn't know our local department was volunteer. Bullshit and creative writing maybe. But unless I missed something, I didn't see anything about the building being unoccupied. Just that the 2 named residents escaped. Of course, if they had been been a paid "Professional" department, their x-ray vision powers would have confirmed this.
  20. Doesn't surprise me anytime I hear that a company or person is leaving NY. Businesses, and the people they employ, are leaving. NY is losing population. 50 years ago the most populated state, now the 4th. I recently spent several days traveling through many upstate counties/towns from Roscoe to Oneonta and all through the Catskill Park region. There are more abandoned farms, houses and houses for sale than not. In one area I went through, nearly 2/3 of the houses/farms had "for sale" signs. Sad. A recent Gallup Poll found that 41% of current NY residents would leave if they could.
  21. MLSS has their Marlboro crew at the old TOMVAC bldg. I don't know the particulars of their contract with the Town, but in many of their contracts they have a penalty clause where they will pay $$ if they don't meet their contractual obligations, including response times. IF Mlss has a contracted area that requires coverage and they need the crew to handle either a transport or another 911 call, they backfill that station so that coverage is nearly seamless.
  22. It's for sale if you're interested.
  23. Sorry to post this so late, just found it late last night. Here is the funeral info for Trooper Skinner. http://www.wbng.com/news/local/Service-arrangements-announced-for-fallen-trooper-Christopher-Skinner-261315061.html He was also a member of the Five Mile Point Fire Co. Also found out he was my brother's son-in-laws cousin.
