The scary part of the whole matter is why was the NRC testing it ? There had to be more to this story than meets the eye. The only time the FDA gets involved if there are sickness' or deaths. Why on earth would the NRC pick this product to test, and what about other products. It makes me laugh that production of materials for our daily lives are being made in other countries and not properly tested until a health alert is out or death from products. This matter makes we wonder how did the manufature get there hands on Cobalt 60.

There is a plan in place. The career depts in So. Westchester have drilled in NYC annually on it for the last 5+ years. FDNY still wants a check in at Yonkers Raceway for accountability, but that is only taking about 15-20 minutes. Part of that is they may not want us deploying to station A, when they need us at X. Its easier to make that call then.

I agree with that. But if you go north of Yonkers or Mt. Vernon and White plains its mostly volunteer depts. Example my Department went down on 9/11 to a staging area 2. If a Bronx Dept goes to the city the plan would be for the next northern dept to fill that dept and so on and so on. To send every dept to a staging is fine untilo you have a secondary device in a soft target area. or a standard call by moving every northern dept. down one and keep filling in the empty ones there will still be protection. But there's no plan or talks about this or how comuntions would work. I hate to say it but I feel we haven't changed for the better since 9/11

In stead of sending Northern counties to N.Y.C. The City of New York and Westchester County should devise a mutual aid program, where certain departments wether paid or volunteer respond to a firehouse in N.Y.C no matter what. Example: Volunteer Fire Department in Sothern Wetchester will respond to Engine 52 Ladder 52 in Riverdale section of Bronx ( Firehouse off Saw Mill Pky ), if there is a situation in Manhattan and they respond. If this Firedepartment in westchester knows that they will allways be doing mutual aid to this area they can get maps, proper tools, hoses, and other equipment that they might need for the neighbor hood. There is no plan in place. Instead all mutal aid will go to Yonkers raceway and wait for assingments, and then it will be to late It's time to be pro-active. We need traning between all departments. But because some are paid and some are volunteer departments will never play good in the sand box. Is's time to put that to rest and be ready( hope to God, never again) for a problem in N.Y.C.

My wife and I both watched " There something wrong with Aunt Diane", in fact I watched it a couple of times to read and see between the lines. The questions I think of is

1. Is Daniel having sex with his sister-in-law?

2. It sounds like he wants nothing to do with his son and his care?

3. Daniel stated he works at nights as a security guard, but Jay( sister-in-law) says hes home all day?

4. How can abscessed tooth cause a stroke?

5. If she wasn't a drinker how can she guzzle vodka and not throw up?

6. I thought the medical report shoold levels of THC is the children that passed away? Why didn't the HBO documentary talk about this?

It's coming to a point where all volunteer EMS agencies are going to need a paid driver and/or EMT. It's not the fault of the organizations, it's just that volunteers are hard to come by. It hurts as a volunteer to see this happen by the safety of our residents are the most important.

There will be nobody ever better than Betty "MA" Lewit. She made Irvington Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Her caring for others, and her strength will never be matched. IVAC will never be the same with out her. Heaven has the best EMT, and soul up there. We all love you Ma and will never forget you.

I am so very sorry for your loss of Firefighter Patrick Joyce my heartt and prayers go to his family and my prayers go out to the injured firemen and there families. I will never forget that morning. My heart also goes out the the Yonkers Firedepartment. Thers nothing I can write that will stop the pain. God Bless all of you, and God Bless Patrick. Im so so sorry.

As a American Red Cross Volunteer, I just want to remind all Firedepartments and their Chiefs, that if you need the Red Cross notify 60 control. There have been several fires where the firedepartment forgets and victims are left without shelter, clothing or food for a while until they ask. The American Red Cross will not self deploy. You tell us what you need and we'll bring it. Food, snacks, drinks, comfort items, etc. As soon as were activated one Red Cross member will check in with Incident Command. All other Volunteers will set up in a location of your choice.

I had a good friend of mine take his own life at a very young age, and I have gone on ems calls when a soul has taken their own life. there's no stopping a person once their mind is made up. The Tappan Zee Bridge seems to be the magnet for victims. It's hard to understand what goes through their mind befor they jump and when there in the car. Did he/she lose a job, divorce, custody of a child. The question we should be asking is that do any of the victims who have jumped off the Bridge make any phone calls prior? There is no easy answer. I think more medical training and learnig signs of a person who might be crying out for help might slow the rate down. I hope a pray knowbody ever has to witness what I have in my life.

The Irvington Volunteer Fire Department drew up the specs. with the help of a consultant. The Drawings went to the village. The Village Of Irvington sent the drawings out to bid. The lowest bid won. The Fire department had nothing to do with picking out the company that was building the firetruck. The firedepartment had nothing to do with the payment plan, or if the Village had a performance bond.

Our Ambulance Corps. Does'nt have uniforms. We were street clothes. But when I go on a call, of course depending on the call I will remove my outer laying clothing in my garage and put in right in the washing machine. If it's a really bloody call, or something possibly more infectious. Bye Bye Clothing. I think everybodys right all EMS Volunteer agencies should have medical uniforms, jumpsuits, or scrubs to put over existing clothing. In todays world we don't know what is in the atmosphere, or breeding on patients. I'm just as guilty as many other responders. The flu is going around like crazy. If we get paged out for a patient not feeling well do we walk in with n100 masks. Everbody should give ourselves a pat on the back in the Emergency services. Look at the crap we have to go through.

Or would this move discourage members from posting?

Of course, we would allow members to use their first name and last intiial, or first name and shield number, etc. We'd also have to come up with a way for members who have simiar name to differentiate themselves.

I feel this move would hold members to a higher standard, resulting in more quality posts and more of a "community atmosphere". I also think it would cut down signifcantly on a loy

For $2,500 a year to be EMS Mutual aid Coordinator or Fire Coordinator you can keep it. When I saw the posting of the job and saw how much you get paid. I thought it was a type-o. And thats before taxes.

I cringe when I see crews bring out the KED. For one I believe that it takes too long and there is way too much movement. Although I was trained in it, I don't think I actually used it. It was faster and easier and I think safer for my partner and I to stabalize the neck and do less movement with the PT right onto a backboard and onto the stretcher. With the KED you have to stabalize the neck. move the PT foward, back, strap and maybe move again if the straps get caught you have to move again. Then you have to turn and put the PT on the backboard. I just think it is a waste of time.

You are right the KED is a pain in the a**. I think you hurt the patient more trying to get them out of the car with a KED on than without

All your Answers to spinal imbolization is correct. But don't go to the hospital with a MVA patient and their not collared and boarded. Protect the patient and yourself. Board and Collar. If the patient does'nt want it have them sign the back of the PCR and document that patient refuses. Have a cop witness it. Trust me after all said and done and two years have past when your Ambulance Corp. gets a letter pertainig to a lawsuit by the victim. Make sure Board and Collared.

I wish I was a cop in that force. by the way if you look on the computer screen in front of the cop, it looks like a female body part that I can't metion.

Great topic! all the information is perfect, but one problem. Some Volunteer organizations that have paramedic services sometimes delay transport until ALS arrives. As an EMT once we walk into the household and take baseline vitals, and make a determination. It's Load and go! Due the rest of the testing in the rig and notify the Hospital you have a possible CVA. Some EMTs go to the home due Vitals and wait for AlS. I don't know if it's lack of training or because their affrad to make a judgment so severe. EMT's have to be better trained and not wait for ALS to arrive

I think someone is trying to clean up 202/35 and Compround Road in Peekskill. So many fires, it sounds like someones looking to put townhomes in that area. Great job Peekskill firedepartment and all mutual depts. You Guys/Girls are really getting a work out there.

I'm tired of the news having his passing as headline news. It's not like he was a famous star with a huge career. It's ashamed what happened, but enough. There more important things in the world today, than his passing. People die every second from depression or overdoze in medication. Do we talk about them. If he was still alive with all those millions he makes would he care about any of us. If it was accident due to underlying medical conditions, it's a shame,but if he did it to him self. Another one bites the dust.

Know I know why civilians always think of firefighters as beer drinkers and a******* at parades. If that was our firedepartment the Firechief would of suspended all of us. There is a time and a place for that. We even have a unwritten policy for parades. If your going to drink and be a a** take of your uniform and put civilian clothes on. The Firechiefs in our department have zero tolerence for any alcohol abuse

It's important to try to help volunteer firefighters/ems personal to live within their district. By supporting them with a tax break it at least shows the village is trying. Imagine if the Villages like Tarrytown, Irvington, etc had a paid firedepartment. The taxes for the residents living in the villages would be through the roof. In the volunteer world of firefighter/ems, it's not like it used to be. I doudt a person making over $150,000.00 a year is going to wake up at 2:00am for a automatic alarm or a ems call for a 85 year old man with stomach cramps. Volunteers are important< and I feel what Tarrytown is doing is great, I wish there was more Villages that support all services like Tarrytown. More should be done.

The Village of Irvington still uses a horn mounted on the Town Hall Room. The Horn is used for fire calls and for 12:00pm. The Village and some local businesses have copies of the horn codes for anybody that wants. The firedepartment also has fire pagers which are activiated by the Irvington Police Dept. or 60 Control

one very important factor has not been metioned. What was the ambient temperture during the accident. They have had cold weather in Texas. Did Hypotherma set in. Remember their dead until there warm and dead. Aslo what was the condition of the patient. Never assume a patient is dead until full assessments are done. Was extracation involved? Was there any v-tach or v-fib on the monitor. Where there Paramedics on scene to try to administer meds? To many questions still open. In my Department if there is obvious death thats one thing, but if were not sure do to weather conditions or vehicle conditions we will still work the patient and transport to the closest hospital or trama center.

I agree with FEX404. As long as the new fire chief has all the training, whats the difference. He had to be a Lieut. or captain first. It's good to get young members active and with responsibility. At 21 he has a choice sitting in a bar drinking or taking a active role in his community. It's ok to die for our country at 18, but we question if a 21 year old fire chief doesn't have the experence. I've seen older Chiefs with experence make bad judgement calls. Thats why you depend on your Asst. Chiefs and Lieuts. to guide through. Good For Him I wish him the best. The only problem is wil the other members in his firehouse respect and listen to him as a Chief or a wet behind the ears 21 year old.
