  1. Thanks......I'll opened up my spot at the next Con Ed drill for an active guy. Us retired guys don't need ongoing training anymore. (RE:Post #13)
  2. That is exactly what I am referring to, the cable with the hangers. Unless Con Ed has changed the way they install the AERIAL CABLES, it looks just like a primary feeder cable. These are the cables that are normally under ground, however at certain points it comes above ground and is strung just above telephone/cable tv lines. This aerial cable can be mistaken for telephone/cable tv. YFD910 you described the aerial cable to a tee. However it's not a secondary, it's a primary. Until you see one of these aerial cables on fire, you would have a hard time accepting that what you are looking at is ELECTRIC and not a phone/cable tv line, I saw one burning and it opened my eyes. Get the Con Ed Reference card out of the rigs and look at the place on the pole and the hanger system that is used. I think you will see where I am coming from.
  3. How can you say that the sticks/booms are at least 10' away. The boom is pushing the lower thick cable and is inches away from the top thick cable. The top thick cable looks like it is an electric aerial cable (primary feeder), I don't think that it's a cable T.V. line either.
  4. To use a line from Yogi Berra, it's Deja vu all over again. The ladder placements in these pictures look very dangerous. Way too close to the wires. I hope someone from Yonkers can tell me that ALL the power was turned off to the overhead lines. To use a line from George Carlin, this should be Vu jade (should never had happened).
  5. With 4 FF's on duty and 2 BLS ambulances, is it possible that ALL on duty career FF's could be out on EMS calls? Who handles the fire calls?????
  6. The Boston T.V. Stations with reporters on the scene reported that there were no injuries and all people were accounted for. The Red Cross is assisting with 150 displaced residents.
  7. You could not miss the Secret Service, they were the guys in the suits riding around in the golf carts that had placards that said USSS on them.
  8. I saw it near the E.M.S. staging are. Not much going on near it. Did see about 5 cases of Poland Springs water stacked up next to it.
  9. There are departments in other parts of the country that you could walk in to the personnel office and have a job in less then a month. Florida was like that back in the 80's. If you had the training, you had a job. Most people that wanted to get on the job in Florida took their firefighters training on their own. They would give you a civil service test on the spot, just for you, if they had openings that needed to be filled. I was looking for a job in Florida back in the early 80's because it was hard to get on up here in N.Y. If you took the training at the community colleges on your own, you could then go to a fire district and if your timing was right walk away with a job. After I completed my training and became a Florida certified firefighter I was notified that I was very high on the City of New Rochelle's list. So I decided not to continue looking in Florida. Over the next 2-3 months, after deciding not to look further in Florida, I was contacted by West Palm Beach fire dept, Del Trail fire dist., and a department in the Gainsville area that were in need to fill positions A.S.A.P. and wanted me to interview. These departments contacted me, I had not previously had any contact with them. They must have gotten my name from the state of Florida. These are all civil service positions There are also departments that will hire you as a department exec officer, which is a non civil service position. Every area in the country has different rules for what can and can not be done in the hiring process. Are they fair? I guess it depends on what your situation is. The pretend captain from the windy city might not have any problems getting a job in Florida, but I don't see much happening in New york.
  10. Well did you give her the fire extinguisher?????
  11. Some flower boxes with a nice selection of spring plantings would give the trailers a nice homey feel!!!

  17. Great start for those Yanks... If they can't even get the final opening day done how are they going to get through the play offs? LET'S GO METS
  18. Back in the early days of Abbey Richmond the BLS rate was $ 38.50 and $ 1.50/mile +$ 20 for oxygen administration.
  19. Monty your so right. After reading the story and reading the blogs. The names have changed, but not the attitude towards cilvil servants. Again an uneducated taxpayer that doesn't understand 'nothin about nothin' except that he pays too much taxes. He does not know what he gets for his dollar.
  20. I have no resentment against YFD. Everyone makes statements about manning, what we should have and be more like YFD. The City of Yonkers was able through their budget problems in the early 80's to secure massive funding over the years from the state. They have had the pleasure of their state Senators to be able to MAINTAIN that funding. If any other municipality got the type of funding that Yonkers enjoys, then I'm sure they all would do the right thing and put a good part of that money into their fire department along with other departments in their city, but most municipalities don't get the funding. Yes, I will agree that some municipalities are rolling the dice with their manning. Those that DON'T want to FIX their problems should have pressure put on them to up the manning. Especially the departments that have publicly stated that 'They have X dept right down the road and they will back us up'. Calling for help immediately for a 'bread and butter' fire has to stop. I don't want my F.D. subsidizing another community, especially those that can't return the coverage. However, not providing coverage to the rest to the community doesn't help John Q. Public, who most likely doesn't know what's going on. As to my association to a Volunteer Fire Dept. I was prior to coming on the job a volunteer and now that I am retired I have continued my association. This should add to my credibility, as to I have seen the process from both sides. Something that a lot of people posting here have no clue as to the workings in another department. Every situation is different and there is no cookie cutter fix. Everyone stay safe and try to keep an open mind to see the problems from at least 2 sides, maybe 3.
  21. Bonnefoy Pl. fire comes to mind (a few years ago). The YFD companies actually drove by the fire on their way back to Yonkers. In answer to your statement about the purse strings. New Rochelle was restricted as to how much they could raise the city portion of the tax. This was in return for an additional 1/4 % in sales tax. This was do to the fact that New Rochelle was not getting it's share of state revenue sharing. The same monies that Yonkers get a much larger share. And yes, both city leaders and union reps HAVE gone to Albany and have spoken to our state reps about getting more aid. The answer seams to be that there are other cities that need it more. New Rochelle city and the F.D. have in the past few years made leaps and bounds in securing other funds to equip and man the fire department. It still does not put the manning where it should be, but its better then it was and hopefully will be better then it is. In reference to question 2. That has nothing to do with my question about M/A between N.R.F.D. and YFD. Maybe a topic for another thread.
  22. New Rochelle has always recalled off duty men. This was usually started before mutual aid was initiated. New Rochelle always manned whatever spare rigs they had and would use additional manpower at the scene to prevent mutual aid companies from being called to the scene. With all resources exhausted, how can Yonkers leave New Rochelle and think thats the RIGHT thing to do! I'm confused!
  23. If ALL of the fire departments received the same per capita aid from the State of New York, then we would not be having this discussion! Yonkers, your welcome to use my STATE taxes. Just answer me why you request New Rochelle F.D. to sit in your fire houses and cover your residents and you refuse to sit in a New Rochelle fire house and provide the same coverage to my home and family. Your also welcome in using my CITY tax dollars to cover your residents. I can't figure how Yonkers is HELPING New Rochelle!!!
