  1. Everybody whines about the color of Fairview's apparatus, but isn't lime green/yellow safer than red? So, it's not all about safety!

  3. I cannot remember anytime I read something on this site that ever bashed Mount Vernon Firefighters and how they perform their jobs. Quit the contrary! My feeling is most of us have a great admiration for Mount Vernon firefighters!

  5. I'm watching the Sylmar fire on various websites and news channels. How does anyone fight this type of fire? I can see helicopters making drops and they look like tiny specks against the backdrop of the fire. A Fire Storm is the only way to describe it. Has anyone here ever fought a fire like this? How about some discussion on various techniques, PPE, etc?

  9. For anyone with first hand experience or that have older members that can talk about it, can you give me the diffences between fighting fires in 1968 as compared to 2008. I assume today there are big advantages that they didn't have in 1968. Some examples: Trucks these days pump say 2000gpm. In 1968 they pumped ____gpm? Better? Worse? No difference? Ladders are of light weight construction, generally not wooden. PPE is obviously better today. But in 1968 was there less emphasis on interior attacks? Hoses and nozzles, easier to handle today? Speaking with an "oldtimer", He says "back in the day" they didn't have all this fancy stuff (PPE mostly) and we still put out the fires from the inside. Just looking for some opinions.
  10. Excerpt from this website: http://www.historicpatterson.org/Exhibits/...es2-2.php#Lloyd March, 1965, Lloyd Lumber completed construction of a new, much larger building, located behind the old building, with the entrance on NYS Route 311. The new structure was located approximately on the site of the present Benfield Electric warehouse. The new building used steel trusses to provide a fifty foot clear span, creating a large, 7,500 sq. ft. open selling floor. The Patterson Post Office moved into the old Lloyd space, but only occupied the space for a short time. An adjoining two story building continued to be used by Lloyd for storage. In October, 1967, a fire on the second floor of that building caused considerable damage, but was brought under control in ten minutes by the Patterson Fire Department. The Department arrived quickly with four pieces of equipment and 40 men, and extinguished the blaze which was confined to the 30 foot by 15 foot second floor space. The fire was fed by cardboard shipping cartons containing new cabinets, and the burning cartons created thick smoke. The Pawling Fire Dept. joined the Patterson Dept. after being summoned by a panicked onlooker, according to Patterson Fire Chief William J. Bubenicek. Fire would destroy Lloyd Lumber again, this time the new store that was built in 1965. The store was rebuilt, but, on July 24, 1975, both the new Lloyd Lumber building and the adjoining Patterson Work Bench furniture store were completely destroyed by a quick moving fire that was reported at 6:30 PM on a Thursday evening. The fire started in the Lloyd building and spread to the furniture store. Firefighters from Patterson, Putnam Lake, Pawling, Brewster, and Lake Carmel responded with 200 men and 19 pieces of equipment. Two men from the Patterson department and two men from the Putnam Lake department were overcome by smoke and taken to the emergency room at Putnam Community Hospital in Carmel. Cleanup began the next day, and Lloyd's employees removed the undamaged goods that were stored outdoors. Lost were the 10,000 sq. ft. showroom, the attached warehouse, all adjoining storage buildings, and the separate building housing the furniture store.

  14. Chris, Being you're the guy reading the numbers, what would you recommend for the roofs? Both of our ambulance's have no markings on the roof. Lettering the roof is not expensive. I would like to know what works for you, and I'll get it done.
  15. They are retractable orange safety fences. Instead of using drums, cones and horses when the parkway floods, one man can open up the unit and pull out the fence. You'll notice a receiving "shoe" on the opposite side of the road from the "brown torpedo". http://www.watermarksafety.com/products/pr...sRollacade.aspx
  16. Couldn't open your link. Also searched E-Bay and did not see Tarrytown's old Mack.

  18. What are the advantages and disadvantages to the use of each of these apparatus? In areas that have more than one type of truck, what dictates the responce of each?
  19. And all this with the roadway open to traffic? NYSP didn't allow the road to be closed?
  20. I saw a FDNY tiller on Bronx River Road yesterday and it made me wonder about the various types of aerials available. NYC has a good variety and I wonder what the criteria is for assigning which type of truck to which area.

  22. The new ramp will exit northbound to Yonkers/Mt. Vernon Avenues. The northbound exit to Oak St. will be eliminated. THis will remove the traffic jam on Oak St. with cars trying to enter the parkway northbound and cars exiting from the parkway.
  23. Other than rollovers/extrication calls, what is the normal responce to highways on medical calls. Ambulance, medic, engine, ladder? I'm looking at the crew safety aspect.
