  3. Just fyi this is not a 21 plus event. Anyone under 21 will get a wrist band to identify that they cannot drink.
  4. first off theyre being silly since it is not a true test. It is only experienced based. Second to answer your question I and my coworkers did the exam last year and had the same issue. I called dcas and they said the exam stays open till the last day of filing.
  5. It stays open till the last day of filing, but call dcas to confirm that
  6. http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcas/html/employment/monthlyexamschedule.shtml http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcas/downloads/pdf/noes/201202004000.pdf If you missed it last year, or just recently became an EMT this is your opportunity to file. I'm pretty sure we only hire off the list now, not the phone call.
  7. 2500, but also there will be people in ems who cant take 2500 and will get hired off 2000
  8. Anywhere from a few months to a year plus lol. The next academy got pushed back from sept to jan however with the fire promotions anticipated next year we expect to.go on another hiring blitz
  9. I haven't heard that we ordered 9 I did hear that we ordered a new MRTU ( aka BOB which is short for big oxygen bus). I believe we only had one of those, we maybe ordered 5 MRTU's ( one for each borough like the merv)
  10. Mohegan has 3 chiefs cars, 1 fire police car, 1 career captains car, and 4 EMS utilities ( that all get used every day to avoid wear and tear on the Engines)and Mohegan EMS ( which is a separate organization on paper) has 1 ems fly car.
  11. I can't foresee any problems with this happening in the bronx ....
  12. Wonder how quick after a few NRRs on tour 1 it will take before a command order saying no reclining comes out
  13. Here are two bigger photos, these are not mine and are taken off the FDNY EMS rant website.
  14. it's real, we haven't gotten any on the street yet, oh and it has two blue lights in the back. it also has the extended cab which you can't really see to well since the pic is small.

On a side note EMT Poliakoff and I were partners for a while at work. He is a standup guy, I am happy he was able to make a huge difference,
  16. To which I couldn't agree more. However saying protocols are only guidelines( which I know you did not but NWFD did) WILL get people in trouble. It takes clinical judgment not to be a robot and be a be a GOOD EMT or Paramedic, however operating within our scope or practice is a must to not get jammed up. A good EMT or Medic will be a good detective and realize just because a patient presents with something doesn't mean it can't be X,Y, or Z. However as you pointed out those protocols which came out eventually( EDP sedation) happened because people CALLED telemetry and didn't just do it on their own. My concern is not with letting our people do more, but with people doing more with no guidance from a Doctor. Our jobs take a good deal of detective work, and ingenuity in stressful situations, however we are not allowed to just go out and do things without approval.
  17. As I have been explained multiple times, and through multiple different medical directors. Neither an EMT or a EMT-P is allowed to deviate from their set protocols unless authorized by their medical director. Any Deviation from that and you are not only putting your job on the line but that of the Doctor who oversees whatever agency you are working for. EMT's and Medics DO have to follow their protocols because we are NOT Doctors. Doctors have years and years of school and a ton more clinical training then we do. Protocols are not " Guidelines" in the eyes of EMT's and Paramedics they should be seen as law. I've been explained that in tricky situations, or if you want to think out of the box you need to authorize it through telemetry. Whilst I know a lot of exceptionally talented and gifted Paramedics who I would trust with my life, the nature of our job dictates we obey our protocols and when in doubt call telemetry. Also it's been proven that an over abundence of medics on any given( MCI, Cardiac Arrest, APE, etc) call is more detrimental to a patient because people forget the order in which you're supposed to operate. ( BLS then ALS). I can tell you first hand that in the field whether the boss has a Yellow patch or a White patch doesn't matter. As long as they are competent at organizing additional resources ( giving a notification, updating the ALS, requesting FD, etc) the patch doesn't matter. I've met plenty of bosses who are medics who aren't as great organizers as some EMTS, and vice versa. At the end of the day the boss isn't there to do patient care. They are there to make sure the job as a whole is getting done correctly.
  18. As I said some speculate, there is no offiical talking but you have paranoid people who will back that with their " facts". As mentioned the move from a 3 star chief to a 4 star chief puts the Chief of EMS directly under the Chief of Department. What implications if any this will have in the department I don't know, but it shows respect for the position.
  19. http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2011/01/05/2011-01-05_botched_blizzard_response_costs_emergency_medical_services_chief_john_peruggia_h.html Just the first scapegoat of the storm. Rumors throughout are that more heads will roll before Bloomberg feels like enough of the blame has been put on everyone else. Position of EMS Chief also raised from 3 starts to 4 stars ( some speculate Commissioner Cassano wants to have medics on fire trucks so this may be of relevance to that in the future)
  20. The city would rather give us toy shovels then chains. Fdny ems issued two shovels per unit one is a military spec, very short and good for digging a foxhole but not snow. The other is plastic breaks. the city doesn't want to give us chains. Couple that with the amount of new people on the job/ people the city hires with no driving experience and you get what happened. Two guys I know got stuck with a tight asthmatic a few blocks from lincoln, so they improvised and made a sled out of the stretcher using the longboards, and pulled her the rest of the way to the hospital.
  21. I'm an organ donor. I've been registered since I could. I even have the little heart on my license to indicate I am.
  22. By now I'm sure a lot of you who respond to EMS calls have run into at least one young person who has drank to much of that new drink Four Loko. For those who don't know what it is, it's a 23.5 oz alcoholic drink flavored ( grape, orange, etc.) which has a 12 percent alcohol content, and the same amount of caffeine of a 12 oz coffee. It has become very popular with high schoolers and college students. Over the last few weeks pretty much every drunken person under the age of 25 I've picked up has been drinking this " blackout in a can". I know that people are pushing to get this drink banned, but before it ever gets there we still have to deal with the fact that it's on the street. I was wondering if anyone else noticed an jump in younger people drinking to much recently, or have had calls attributed this? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_%28drink%29 http://www.nydailynews.com/lifestyle/2010/10/19/2010-10-19_four_loko_an_alcoholic_energy_drink_is_banned_at_a_new_jersey_college.html
