  1. Fire Districts are another political subdivision of the government. In NYS Cities, Villages and Fire Districts can provide fire protection. Town cannor provide fire protection on their own and have to contract with an independent Fire Company or a Village or Fire District to cover a predesignated area (Fire Protection District).

It gets so confusing there is actually now a course at the Fire Academy in Montour Falls to explain it all (Legal Considerations for Volunteer Fire Departments). It's run by Mark Butler for teh Buffalo area and is a real eye opener as to who is the famous "Authority Having Jursidiction" or AHJ.

In the case of Freeport, they are a Village Fire Department and have to answer to the Mayor and Village Board

  3. how is an agency gonna know about a persons driving record? someone correct me if im wrong by the place were this incident took place is a VOLUNTEER agency. your gonna tell me that every agency should do driving record checks on ALL the members that drive?? are u crazy...thats just a straight up WASTE of money!!! ill tell u right now i've had accidents in my personal car 2 of which i totaled my car... you mean to tell me that the agency that i belong too shouldnt let me drive because of my PRIOR driving record??? honestly if there is a good driver training program out there its the EVOC class. people get in ACCIDENTS every day...THATS WHY THEY ARE CALLED ACCIDENTS!!!

do i think what this guy did was wrong? yes i do. and he should be held responsable for his actions because he knew he took the sleeping aid.

New York State DMV offers the LENS Program (Licence Emergency Notification System, I think). You sign up through the DMV website and you are notofied of tickets, suspensions, revocations and reported accidens of your members licences. It's a free service.

  4. To me that's a simple question; I would do what is right for the fire service, what is right for EMS, if that was my Commission. But this same issue pops up when a chief of a department is asked his/her position regarding the department.

Unfortunatly, "Commissioners" in this case are loyal to the political machine that feeds them and does what is needed to save themselves.

    IMHO

  5. Both Putnam and Dutchess (and I'm sure other counties) have combined dispatch centers. They seem to do pretty well. As with everything, there will of course be growning pains, but IMHO, it's a step in the right direction. Now if only we could centralize the PSAPs and have every emergency unit in the county dispatched from the same center like in Dutchess (well, almost).

I work for Putnam, we only do 911 Police calls. I used to work @ PCSD where we did both 911 and regular police work. There is a major diference. As for centralizing PSAP's in Westchester, it will be easier for Playland to make a profit

  6. FYI...

A fireman's bell cap is intended to be worn with the brim facing the front.

No matter how cool you may think you look, it is never Ok to wear a uniform cap backwards. It is disrespectful to your uniform, your department, and the fire service as a whole.

It may even be grounds for a solid smack upside the head.

    That is all.

So totally agree. Anyone who knows me knows how I feel about this. I have walked up to other FF in bullpens and asked them to turn it around correctly or take it off
