  2. Thanks Guys, Not a 100% but working on it. Between the liver thing and the Pnuemonia it's kicking my tail. I did however manage to drive the nurses crazy during my stay, which is always a plus, lol. Had one nice one around 23 or so who kept me company and actually seemed interested listening to the radio with me. Hey I guess it's once a whacker always a whacker - lol. Hopefully I'll be good to go to Sleepy's wetdown on 8/9 I'll be looking for you guys. Joe T.
  3. Who needs lights anyways - the public doesn't move for jack for full fledged emergency vehicles - or better yet, they try to beat you. I say put a push bumper on the front and move em out of the way.

  5. I know for a fact that Westchester EMS has a turnout coats, goggles, and a helmet in each of their flycars unless they took a BIG step backwards. I know when I left there in Feb. 02 to go to Metro/TransCare - They, Westchester, had the turnouts in the flycars and were ordering them for the rigs. Should Turnouts be worn at a crash scene, well - yeah. Not sure about you guys but I really don't feel like getting stitched up myself or picking glass out of everywhere - which you wind up doing to some extent anyways. When I vollied with Sleepy Hollow same deal -Spota made sure there was turnout gear on the rigs in the appropiate size for that crew and he made sure it was worn. You all know the saying "be part of the solution, not the problem". In other words, take care of yourself, because if you wind up out of commission, you're no good to anyone, including yourself. One thing I can definately say about WEMS is they were very safety concious about their employees, unlike the former Westchester Ambulance/Danbury owners and I'm not even going to start to go there. You guys and Gals, all Stay Safe out there. Joe
  6. Guess we were running out of gas in 1998 - take a read, and wow look at those high prices (definately sarcasm there) http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?...31/NEWS8788.dtl
  7. We all know that the rigs out there are pretty much all top heavy and anyone who drives knows that you have to compensate for that. You start adding more weight and you're looking at more problems. West Haven had a medium duty get hit in 1999 and one of the medics is still in a vegetative state and will never recover. If the side of your rig gets cut open like a tin can or you roll, you're pretty much screwed. Face it, how many times is the crew in the back really strapped in? Should you be? Hell yes. Is it really practical? well maybe not. You have to be loose in the back if you're working on a pt. You get slammed during an emergency trip to the ER and you are going to get hurt, the only thing different is the severity of the injuries. The other thing is, you get T-boned and you are in for a world of hurting. As much as I hate to say it, this as well as all forms of public safety (and yes even though it's not always recognized EMS is a form of public safety) there are dangers to this job. You may go to work and not come home. Should more be done to protect those out there in a rig - of course. And as stated from previous posters. A tree will almost always win, and in the Rockland crash, the flatbed that was struck, acted like a can opener. Ambulances are not built like fire apparatus, and to be honest, while they would be to a degree safer, it just would not be practical. You think your rig is top heavy now add some more weight and see what you get. This crash is a tragedy as well as the rockland crash. Can better driver training help? To a degree, yes, but some accidents aren't a crew members fault. You all know the idiots out there that try to beat the rig, or aren't paying attention and hit you. And each and every one of you reading this and posting have probably all had a close call or two. Unfortunately, accidents will continue to happen, and sad enough to say, I as well as each of you here, will never not have to deal with the loss or injury of a friend, co-worker or another EMS member. Unfortunately that's just a fact of life. We're all family and as a family, we come together during these times. It just sucks that crap like this has to happen. Joe PS- Sorry about the rant, but Woody, the West Haven medic was my ex-partner and my friend so it hits home.
  8. actually CT just passed a law for the two seperate gas prices. funny thing is they are calling the thing a gas discount - which all in all it isn't. they aren't really discounting the gas, they are just passing the card fees on to those who use credit. Joe BTW paid $4.29 a gal. here in West Haven today. Most places are $4.39-$4.78 for regular. This is friggin ridiculous. Get ready boys, with the way things are going, I think we're going to wind up giving the depression from the 40's a run for the money eventually. Oh and I just read something the other day - the UK after you convert prices to US is paying over 17 bucks a gal. now that has to suck.

  11. Hey WAS - kinda reminds me of a certain dispatch to the "basement" of "Briarcliff Manor". Not to knock things, but both incidents go to show why dispatch systems should be local. Joe T.
