  1. At least in Orange it is pretty much up to the department to make their designation of Tanker or Engine. Monroe 537 and Lakeside 535 are good examples of pumper tankers that are called Engines. Both units have 2000GPM pumps and carry 2500+ gallons of water.

On the contrary, Suffern in Rockland runs two seemingly identical 1250 GPM pumpers. I'm not sure of the tank size but looking at them they are probably no more than 1250 or 1500 gallons max. I don't know much about their operations and maybe someone from Rockland can fill us in but I imagine that the two pieces of equipment has different duties.

  2. I currently live in Buffalo and yes the storm really did catch most people offguard. The problem wasn't necessarily the volume of snow, it just had terrible timing. Since most all of the trees still had a full set of leaves on them, when the snow fell they couldn't hold the weight. The result was a lot of them literally snapped in half and fell on power lines. That is why 300,000 cutomers were without power and I hear they might not be restored untill Tuesday at the earliest.

Here are some pictures taken by my friend and I:

  3. what are they actually demenstrating in the video? they just kinda crawl in and then stop like a foot in, is that like "hey folks, this is how fast stuff can go wrong in this job." also love the guy with not bunker pants running in to help.  always wear all your gear.

You didn't know that guy had Nomex jeans on? I hear the work really well too because all the chiefs in my area wear them all the time.

  4. Sparrowbush (Orange Co.) has a couple of monster Autocars like that.  They've had quite a few problems with one of them, though.

  5. It might be a little far from Westchester, but DUFFS in Buffalo is hands down the best wings anywhere. If you are ever in the area I highly recommend it! They also serve their own beer called DUFFS beer! What can be better than that?

  6. I agree that Pierce makes the best apparatus out there today.

  7. Those yellow engines sure are ugly. They could have done a much better job with that color scheme. I have seen many "safety green" rigs and they all look a hell of a lot better than that. Its almost as if they painted them like that because no one wanted to give up the red so they made the yellow look as hideous as possible.

Related question: what year did the FDNY add the signature stripe?

  8. I have heard about the live in programs in Maryland and they seem fantastic.

CM36, when you say you ride with a department down there, and I have heard others use that term too, what exactly does that mean? Are you still a member in Westchester and you just transfered your training credentials down there and they let you respond to calls with them? I am curious how exactly it works.

  9. I also hope FF Moore has a quick recovery. Open jump seats scare me, even if they have some little half door, this incident shows they don't really do much good. We have one engine left in our department with open jump seats and when whenever I am riding in the back of it I buckle up.

I know firefighters everywhere used to ride on the back step of the engine which in my opinion is madness. I certainly don't trust myself to be able to hold on without slipping while the engine is going full bore down city streets, let alone trying to put your gear on in the process. The safest way is to have enclosed cabs and avoid getting dressed while responding.

As for the rig in question, I believe it is the Mack shown on this page:

  10. Funny I was driving up Interstate 81 today and I saw a bunch of parents from "Forks" at a rest stop talking about how their team was going to beat Rye. Then I saw some of them driving on the highway with writing on the sides of their car that said "Toast Rye!" I thought it was pretty obnoxious in a humorous sort of way.

Congradulations to the Rye team, I'm glad a team from the local area could win the state.
