  1. Bergen County NJ has a similar mapping program and they have bought a license for every municipality in Bergen. Some PD/FD's use it and some don't. It does have a lot of potential, you can add "layers" to the map. Bergen's shows every hydrant location as a layer. I've added floor plans to our map for the schools, just click on the school on the map and the floor plans will pop up. Some dispatch center's also have it tied into 911 calls, so the lat and long of the cell caller is plotted on the map for you. I saw one demonstration of what Ridgewood NJ has done with there map, and it was very impressive, you just need someone who knows how to add to it and keep it up to date.

  2. Guys- I posted the vehicle and said that I "believe" it was the pilot's vehicle, but I don't know that for a fact and I don't know in what capacity it was used. It could have been used just around the airport when the pilots were at Teterboro, or maybe it was a take home, I have no idea.

Chris- you said that NJSP is the only aviation asset in northern NJ.... Not true, Bergen County has a small single engine plane which has yet to prove itself. I know if I need aviation, NJSP or NYPD is getting called 1st before "Bergen-1". But to Bergen County's credit, they do advise all patrol units in the County of their patrol schedule and how to contact them. Hopefully Bergen's attempt at airborne law enforcement is successful, but I hope this is just the first step to getting a helicopter, which would be more practical. And thanks for the heads up about Newark, didn't know they were grounded.

One last point about PAPD not supporting ground units. A month or 2 ago I was talking to 2 PAPD cops from the George Washington Bridge during a midnight shift. Somehow we got on the topic of PAPD's helicopters, they didn't even know there own PD had helicopters and had no idea they were based minutes away from the bridge.

  4. At a Phillies game last night a 17 y/o male ran on to the field during gameplay. He was chased for a while by authorities but they had no luck. A Police officer who was chasing the young man took out his taser and tased him in the middle of the field. Do you think this is the correct think to do in a situation like this? To me it seems a little excessive.

Just watched the video, he gets hit by the taser, goes down to the ground, handcuffed, and is back on his feet and walking in less than 30 seconds. It doesn't appear anyone is injured, so why would you think this is excessive? Would tackling him have been better?

    PS Yes, I'm a cop, so I'm a little biased :)

  5. This unit is providing wonderful assistance to Yonkers and all others, BUT...why did it take forever to establish this in Westchester County when seemingly every other large area had them in use many, many years ago???

You guys in Westchester are very luck to have any aviation unit. I work for a municipal PD in Bergen County (NJ) and there has been talk for many years about Bergen County getting a helicopter. In NJ, aviation support is handled by NJSP, however most of their missions are for medical calls, not law enforcement. There was a rumor going around last year that Bergen and Rockland were going to have a joint helicopter, but that obviously hasn't happened. In NJ, I'm only aware of NJSP, Newark PD, and I think Camden County Sheriff having helicopters. Bergen County just recently acquired the use of a small single engine plane and they have been patrolling with it. I know my PD has primarily used NJSP, but we have also used Port Authority and NYPD. I've flown with NJSP and NYPD, both a great bunch of cops. It is frustrating that one of the wealthiest counties in the US, does not have its own aviation unit, but I guess a fixed wing aircraft is a start...

  6. Just an FYI to an unfortunate situation, wherever the blame may ultimately fall........Vehicle Anti Theft Systems are readily available for just this type of sad circumstance. More and more emergency service vehicles (police, fire and EMS) are being targeted for theft, with sadly unfortunate results. We've done these anti theft systems in vehicles for several of the emergency services with the expectation of preventing this type of situation. Simple to install and effective, they also help meet Homeland Security recommendations. They may save another life someday.

What kind of systems? NJSP has tremco (SP?) switches in their cars. My PD also had them installed after an officer in my county was run over with a stolen police car, but the switches have since been removed. Are there other options besides the Tremco switches?

  7. Well, NJ statutes are different from NY but he has already been charged with murder.

I'm sure that a laundry list of other charges is forthcoming including (but not limited to), grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, criminal mischief, reckless endangerment, felony evading, etc., etc., etc.

As for any charges based upon the fact that the vehicle was an EMS fly-car "that could be used to save a life", I don't think there are any such charges - at least in NYS. They might be able to sustain criminal possession of controlled substances for the drugs on board but that's quite a stretch.

And I have to agree with INIT, it is doubtful that this guy will do life or anything close.

In NJ, the grand larceny charge would be a theft charge, and the felony evading would be an eluding charge. As far as the criminal mischief charge, I doubt it would be charged, but its a pretty good idea, and I can't think of any criminal reckless endangerment charges in NJ.

  8. ?? What is that on the front of that? can the officer even see?

The BCSD car has a banner on the front of it with the Sheriff's name on it. He usually walks in front of it. It is used in parades, I'll have to find another picture of it for you and post it.
