To any of you that have been associated with College Ems Squads...my son is presently a Freshman at our local community college and will transfer to a 4 year school in Sept of 2012. He is contemplating on taking the emt course. He is also a college baseball player and time is usually not friendly during the season. Are the time requirements very stringent? Also do any of the schools wether it be SUNY or private offer any tuition discounts for services rendered. Any response would be appreciated.
It's absolutely a useful activity to get into. Rostering and meeting requirements vary between agencies, but if your son is genuinely interested in the field he will have no problem balancing schoolwork and these requirements. Collegiate teams place heavy emphasis on academics-first and understand that student volunteers have priorities.
(I am a former Chief of Operations of my alma mater's emergency response team)

SUNDAY September 12th, not Saturday
Correct. Thanks for highlighting the mistake.

My condolences.

Can you imagine some of the larger cops trying to squeeze in behind that wheel, with that damn cage right behind the seat?I don't know, but I'd put 'em all in Tahoes......
Or enforce at least some degree of physical fitness in a career that relies upon it.

It's a show and even as a emergency management individual I find it entertaining...

Someone stole a fire hydrant?!

EFFD's hose truck (39-81) carries 5000 feet of 5'.

$175,000 in any profession is great. An amazing salary for a firefighter...

Get rid of the Vollie systems all together...EMS should be run by hospitals and FD/PD's should be run by the municipalities - whether local, county or state is another topic though.
I am a vollie and i can't stand vollies or the vollie system, it only exists to fail, not to mention vollies are NOT true volunteers anymore - they are PAID labor. They get paid with little pensions, stipens and beer. Not to mention they're fat and out of shape drunks. it's very sad to see what a good concept of Americana has become. I am a Vollie that is 100% pro Paid guys - they really are simply put - BETTER.
While I slightly agree, where will the funds come from? Volunteer districts save millions of dollars.
However, when I see departments on Long Island with bowling alleys, 20 LCD flat panel TV's and tiki bars in their stations...

Oakland has enormous crime issues. Not the best place to be laying off uniformed workers.

not that I would have a problem with them running lights other than amber, but wasn't amber found to be the most effective color as far as getting motorists away from the scene??? I cant remember the name of the study, or find it right now, but I know it exists. that was one of the reasons why I run amber rear facing as well as red.
Probably, but it rarely achieves anything but warning. I don't know many individuals who will yield to amber lights.
-
I've always supported utility and public works emergency units having more than just amber lights. Many times, they're just as integral to a safe resolution as we are.
Companies like ConEd and NYSEG are VERY active in emergency preparedness and response.

Just out of curiosity, where is the photo?

I really don't see a problum with this my old dept. For fun paraide's we would sometimes set guys on the roof or hose bed as long as its a just play around paraide and it was not judged. Bit for letting them set there to ride to it hell no if its not a dress one or anything big. Have fun as long as there safe
Besides being highly unsafe, it looks ridiculous. If you want to ride on the roof in random clothing during a parade, rent a flatbed or hot dog truck. Don't do it with official emergency response vehicles and apparatus.

How unprofessional.

you dont have to live in yonkers to not express solidarity with the firefighter.
What?
-
You don't even LIVE in Yonkers so what's your interest? One cannot express solidarity with fellow firefighters if they don't live in the jurisdiction?

Suffolk is an excellent and proactive organization. I had the pleasure of occasionally working with them when I went to University in Long Island. Hopefully the grant goes through and they are able to fund the airplane.

Sounds like a clear review of the shortcomings needs to be performed.

Just curious... Given the scope of the I-84 operations (from Middletown to the state line in Southeast) where was the Command Post and who was in it?
I know EFFD has its command personnel at the EFFD HQ facility. I'm not sure about any unified command location though.
Dutchess also has its EOC operating.

Just curious. Is that a department snowmobile or is it one of the members personal snow mobiles? I'm glad everyone made it out safe!
It is not a department snowmobile.
EFFD has a 6X6, no snowmobiles etc.
