  1. Another thing, if Tarrytown is sending 10 firefighters out of district, what if something happens in Tarrtown?

Is this really a question? when hartsdale goes to fairview for a fire, what do they do when something happens in hartsdale? As not just a member of Tarrytown FD, but a resident...I am pretty happy with the fact that we have more than 10 guys in our department willing to respond to alarms. So when we send 10 firefighters out of the district, we use the other 5 companies with all of their manpower to protect tarrytown. Also, if there is any thing we need more guys for, mutual aid is a helpful thing.

  2. The article claims that Greenburgh pays $220k a year to Tarrytown to cover the Greenville section of town. Im not trying to start anything, but im just curious if this is correct? If so, why is this done when Greenville has its own career department?

As for Riverside getting a new engine, i hope all works well for them regardless. Ive never been involved with spec'ing a rig, but man, i guess i didnt realize how expensive engines have gotten.

The article meant "Glennville", not "Greenville"

  3. The Tarrytown training center is between the striped bass resturante and the baseball field. there used to be a big tower in it but now there is only a trailer that can be used for search and rescue and other small drills. outside of the trailer there is a big lot where we can burn cars, have extrication drills, hose and nozzle testing/drills. We still use the county fire training center just like everybody else but we like to get that little extra practice on our own home town.

  4. Who is going to the Brewster Parade on July 23rd? I heard it is supposed to be a big parade but I dont know of any departments that are going. Also, has anybody who is going recieved their rules and parade information yet?

  5. i have read most of the posts on this forum. i say "most" because some were just too ignorant to stomach. I see a few things going on here: 1. people are mad they did not get thanked for being at the fire. 2- people are questioning the donations to the fire departments. 3- people insulting volunteer firemen. 4- paid departments think that they were singled out and purposely not called for mutal aid and 5- this website has turned into nothing but a silly rant site where mostly people in "explorer" programs have a place to put their 2 cents in.

ill try to address the issues one by one for you:

1- if you were at the fire you deserve a thank you. I have posted before that the paper gave Tarrytown a lot of praise and took some off of the mutal aid companies. I thanked every responding department for their efforts. not good enough?

2- where are the volunteers to tell everybody that a good amount of our money comes from donations. every year my department has a fund drive asking for donations. if hackley wants to give donations...good! i have spent more time at that school on false alarms than anywhere else. why shouldent they donate? we lost equipment and ppe just like all the other departments, i think they are just trying to help out with our expense.

3- I have absolutly no problem with career firemen. I think they all do a great job and i think my opinion is shared by most volunteers. what i absolutely can not stand is that paid guys do not share the same feelings. not all firemen can be paid ones! we are trained, we are professional, and we do it all on our own free time. Pat Derivan was the chief who ran the entire operation at hackley school that day. does anybody actually think when he was asking for mutal aid that he was purposely going over career guys? wouldnt it be a better idea to assume he had just a few other things on his mind that day? he asked 60 control for help and they gave it to him.

as far as volunteer departments not going the man power they need: i will leave out my own department in this case because i do not want to be bias. the village next to Tarrytown is Irvington. If anybody is in Irvington when the whistle blows, find a bench and have a seat for a few minutes. you will see between 20-30 guys pull up in their cars and get on those trucks and still have a good response time to any alarm. do that and then come on here and tell me that volunteers do not have the man power they need.

4- you guys want to promote getting along with volunteers? stop bad mouthing them.

I have said it before and I will say it again, everybody who operated at hackley school did it professionally and worked very well together. what bothers me the most are guys who sit on the sidelines with no gear on and watch guys work while they critisize them. get your gear on and do some work. if guys are not doing something right, help them do it the correct way and dont bad mouth them.

    ps.

moderators should have put a stop to all of these posts before it became an issue like it is.

  6. i figured i would throw my 2 cents in here for everybody, but the only thing I really have to say is thank you to all of the departments that came in and helped. i dont think anybody could say anything negative towards anybody else. all departments were professional and more than willing to get the job done. The paper today really praised only tarrytown for this one, but if you were there you know it was not just us who got the job done. we could not have done it without you. my sincere thanks to all responding departments.

  7. the class was absolutly incredible. i was fortunate enough to get in on it and loved every second. in tarrytown, we cover a portion of the nys thruway and the tapanzee bridge so there is always a chance that something like this could happen. After taking this course i feel more confident about dealing with these situations. if you get an opportunity to take this class...DO IT!

also wanted to say good job to my group (group 2). excellent teamwork over the 2 days.

  8. Your foward thinking is always welcome Dave-- and your right it has been too long  for your company to be with out a station. I am not  sure where you get your figures about a career department from but i wont argue  those right now.  But if you wanted to supplement your Volunteers with career it  can be done, but its  a ugly pill to swallow. First the Department needs the overhaul.

please dont be offended by what I say next.

whats the building on Kaldenberg Place worth?? Theres a start. second do you need eng 76 and its location?? You wanted the ugly truth  I dont think you need a apparatus there its less then 1/4 mile form lad37 and eng 79 and les the 1/2 mile form eng 80.

Be Tarrytown firefighters . consolidate and selloff the property and all old used equipment.

Elect your Chief  by Department vote  not  just  one company at a time.

heres one fact that should convince you--- one compnay has  to elect a Chief(any given year) lests say there are 50 active members in that compnay-- if each company has 50 members-- thats a department of 300 members-- the company in question has a by law that says ---"to be able to vote at the anual election of officers the member must have attended at least 4 meeting during the year" with me so far!!!  they only get 20 at the annual meeting  of the 20 only 15 can vote. they elect a chief vote 8-7 meaning that 8 members of a 300 man department elect the chief that will  be in charge of the budget/fire alarms/ and in charge of protecting the public.

i am not  sure how i got on this subject Dave  but i did  your comments are always welcome as well as your honesty. Be good stay low

    all good points.

good question on how much the kaldenburg property is worth. the last i had heard was that utility 61 would be housed there. (not definate, thats just something i heard around town). i happen to agree that selling the property and putting that money toward their house to save some village money. also when it comes to my company, we have a very large piece of land still on sheldon avenue that we own and we are looking to sell. I dont know where that money will go, or if the older guys in my company (the guys who make those decisions) are considering giving that money to the village to help with the cost of our house.

lets be realistic firecapt, there would be some very unhappy people down there at 76 if the village up and decided to get rid of them all together. that has been a house for a long time down there. also i choose not to comment further on that for obvious reasons (dont need pissed off phoenix hose guys on my back).

i cant disagree with you that we should sell some old equipment. the old washington engine is suposedly being donated to a department in the south. and consolidated's old truck is trying to be sold but no luck with buyers. Personally i am a consolidated engine guy and what washington chooses to do with thier old truck is their business.

now, this department vote thing. its something my father has talked about for years and years and way before i was a member. i dont see why its a bad idea if: the people to be voted on stay in chiefs rotation, and there are measures taken that would ensure that the winner or loser would not divide the department. right now we have a good thing with robby scogna as chief. from what i see, everybody is happy and we are all getting along.

i look forward to your response as always. stay safe

  9. Well as a taxpayer in Tarrytown--- if the Village Board votes to take the  bids "as is" and its going to  build at a gewarwe cost. The taxpayers should revolt.  This is starting to border on criminal, They all better watch the next election results cause they wont be trustees any more they willbe "dont trust me trustees"

this  village board has been= promises= promises =promises  but  way short on delivery. the town  needs a over haul anad so does the Fire Department.. Its time Tarrytown moved into the 21st century.

ok  i opened the door  lets heres it form you guys

here we are agian firecapt. we havent spoke in a while, i hope all is well.

i was a little shocked at the bids also to be honest. it is a lot higher than what the village estimated and i am sure there will be the same people protesting the building of this fire house. but i have to say, wouldent you rather have this built with the higher cost and not spend the money on the paid department like people have suggested? 5 million dollars 1 time does not seem like a lot of money when you look at 8 million a year for paid guys. that would really break the tax payers backs.

i for 1 am glad that this board of trustees was elected. if you look at the people who ran agianst them that proposed private sanitation, public works, and paid firemen then you have to be happy as well with this board.

its a totally acceptable agrument what you are saying walter, but lets just build the damn things and get it over with. its been too long for these 2 companies to be without a firehouse and i really cannot stand another winter or another snow watch in that cold disgusting trailor.

  10. a good amount of teen drivers do take drivers ed/defensive driving/training courses to drive larger aparatus (fire trucks and ambulances) and those teens typically are good drivers. ime not opposed to harsher punishments for teen drivers but dont target them as a whole and generally say they are not good drivers.

offenses such as excessive speeding or frequent/improper lane change should be dealt with in a more serious manor because of the possible outcome of these actions.

i dissagree with SFD302 because everybody needs harsher punishment for traffic violations. its not just teens that drive like this! drive on 95 for 10 minutes and look at the people speeding by you at 90mph and try to look at their faces...they arent all kids.

bottom line: make drivers ed manditory for teens to make them better drivers, but also enforce a harsher penalty for traffic violations for everybody...not just teens

  11. ime not on the parade commitee or anything but from what i am hearing we did not get a lot of responses from departments saying they were interested in attending. i think it might have something to do with last years chief not telling anybody about invitations from neighboring departments for parades/inspection dinners and a few other functions. i hear its not definate we arent having the parade but it looks like we wont. its a shame because i was looking forward to it this year

  12. i like the episode but i was confused about something:

the scene where tommy is working on the dead girl and the paramedics told him basically it was too late. did he bring that girl back or was it just one of his visions that she opened her eyes?

  13. i was listening to the scanner today and i heard irvington get called out for a dryer fire. 2201 requested 1 and 1 + a fast team to the scene but they were cancelled enroute. when i looked on emtbravo later it said "Irvington Structure Fire". did irvington actually have a stucture fire or was it just a smokey dryer? any irvington guys on here?

  14. I am a CPR/AED for the pro rescuer instructor and i have been for about 2 years now.

how much do you charge for your classes? i have been told i charge too little and then some people say i charge too much.

    keep in mind costs:

    dummys= $$$

    course video=$$$

pocket masks/glove kits (if u want to give your students something)=$$$

    trainer AED=$$$

the card itself=$$$ (and by the way, it costs way to much for a glorified piece of paper)
