  1. i wish shorts were allowed where i am. but for safty i understand why they arent. if u have an open cut on your legs you can get some nasty infections/diseases. also at mva's its good to have pants so you can crawl into cars without being cut up too bad. + in my oppinion there is always going to be the one guy who takes shorts just too far...have u ever seen reno 911? if i ever had to work with a guy that had shorts barely covering his stuff id prolly jump out of the moving ambulance

  2. Just two cents from a guy from SHFD. Both new firehouses should be two bay houses capable of garaging TL78. In the event work needs to be done at any of the other stations in Tarrytown, you have a place to put the apparatus without storing it in the DPW garage, assuring that FD equipment is under the lock, key and supervison of the FD. As bad as the tin shacks that 77 and 78 are running out of can be, it's better than sharing with DPW.

not a bad idea, but considering the cost factors of building 2 double bay fire houses would have the mayor calling us insane. the "tin shack" lol that 77 is in right now is suposed to be kept to house fireboat 5 during the winter. i guess if need be and 77's quarters needed repair, the boat could be moved to the dpw and 77 could stay in the old tin shack. utility 61 is going to be stored in washington engines hq after they get their new house.

u had a pretty good idea: possibly we could keep the tin shed that TL 78 is in right now in case its new buildings need repair. ill ask chief scogna about it. i never really thought about it b4 to be honest

  3. November 20th 2005, Consolidated Engine will be hosting the 31st annual Iggy Serina Memorial Breakfast located at Riverside Hose Company#4 quarters at the bottom of franklin street in tarrytown.

All westchester county EMS/Fire personel members invited and bring your families too.

    Food, drinks, and 50/50 raffle

    Breakfast starts 7:00am

    come hungry

  4. They're looking to build a firehouse in a marsh?

i agree with u steve, it sounds a little funny to put it near a marsh land. actually its to the left of the marsh land. it will mean cutting down trees but its not in the marsh. i dont like the idea either but its getting to the point where we have been in a trailor for 4 1/2 years and we want our firehouse back.

as soon as i hear something new, ill forward it to u

  5. firecapt32,

id agree with you if tarrytown was a paid department, but its not and the simple fact of the matter is that our members our on sheldon avenue and it makes absolutly no sense to move the truck away from the membership. every year tarrytown does a recruitment/fund drive and yes the residents on 119 get these letters and are invited to come join. they havent been knocking down the doors to come and join. 177 white plains road and tallyrand are the only places people live on 119 that would be near the truck. it would take twice as long for us to get to even somewhere as close as 177 white plains road if the truck was on white plains road. ime not sure if u live around the area. where are you captain? (just curious)

the population of the south end is mainly from sheldon avenue-tarryhill-east sunnyside lane. thats where the majority of the residents are in the south end.

also the money thing: there is more to it but its funny how you say u dont buy it for a minute when this is a small town matter and small towns have small amounts of money.

there are 2 members of 77 that are currently being trained on TL 78 to answer that question.

comment back if u get a chance

ps. keep it friendly. it feels like u are attacking 77 a little bit when we havent done anything to anybody

  6. heres an update for ya fellas,

the village board has began the design phase to build TL-78 a one bay fire house on 119.

i am not sure if you guys know where 77 is being housed right now (a tin can on the corner of medow street and sheldon avenue) well right across from that property there is a large wooded area containing some marsh land. the village is looking into possibly housing 77 there in a modest building.

ill keep u guys updated on information as soon as i get it

  7. heres a question  why cant eng 77 and tower ladder 78 be housed in the same station on rt 119?

    heres your answer firecapt32,

among other reasons, the biggest ones are the money issue and the strategical placing of the firehouse. first, the money issue. tower ladder 78 is a massive massive truck lol, and ofcourse the ceiling must be very high to accomidate the apparatus. 77 obviously does not need this much head room and to build an entire 2 bay firehouse with the ceiliings as high as they need to be over both bays, it will be a lot of tax payer money.

second is the strategical placement of engine 77. where 77 is now and where it was originally on the south side of 119 is for a reason. this allows 77 to either go down sheldon to access the south end of the village, or go to 119 to service glenville wich is in our protection district. also there is another huge reason we need the fire house on the south side of 119: 10 guys who respond the apparatus 84% of the time (thats a real number) live on sheldon avenue and its side streets. moving the truck away from the men who respond it out 84% of the time doesnt make sense. i know what you are thinking firecapt32, 119 is right next to sheldon avenue, well that is true, however there is a long light at the top of medow street intersecting with 119 where the truck would be, this would turn our response time from 3 minutes to nearly 8 minutes. as a captain i am sure you know that a person trapped in a car (we carry the hurst tool on E-77) for 8 minutes may be life or death.

i hope you understand now why we are fighting so hard for our firehouse to be rebuilt where it belongs. any more questions, feel free to ask me. i have no problem with any curious fellow firefighter

  8. Why do you need a badge-or, why do you feel the need for a badge?  With all the badge-toters running around, I find that for all intents and purposes you get taken LESS seriously unless it's an issued badge WITH credentials.

If it ain't a REAL badge, why bother?

i am a fan of a badge but it is part of my uniform. espeacially post 9/11 i think emt's should have badges WITH THEIR EMT NUMBER ON IT so if it comes down to it, it can be verified. local hospitals around me make u wear a form of ems personel identification. a badge is a nother form of identification. also if you stop to help somebody on the side of the road coming home one day, its a nice thing to show them your badge, it gives them a little sense of safety

  9. good topic, i have been searching for this ever since i heard about the glucometers on BLS rigs. i think it is a great idea to have them on board. lemme say that agian...its a great idea to have them on board, but not to have them relied on to do your assesment. where i am, the bls provider will get there b4 als, do their assesment and make transport decisions. any good emt-b can tell what a diabetic emergency, and furtermore with experiance has a good knowledge of hypoglycemia. i think the glucometer is a good idea because before the medic gets on board you can save time by getting a glucose reading for them. its all about helping the pt after all, and saving time is always a good thing.

if any1 knows when this is supposed to be passed in albany, lemme know.

  10. hey all,

id like to comment on this one because just recently i had a frequent flyer (6 times in my 12 hr shift for 3 days straight...no joke) the guy happend to be addicted to hydrocodone and claimed he had a new pain in his body every time he called. the doctor would give him tylonal (not satisfying his addiction) and send him home. well on the 3rd day of this i got a little fed up because there was a legitiment emergency happening at the same time of him wanting to be transported for drugs. so i called medical control and spoke to the doctor who was very very very familiar with this case and he cleared me not to transport him. i guess its all about cover your own a**, the number 1 ems rule. so if this guy decides to sue i was under direction of a doctor

  11. for a long time i have been writing "extremities ok x4". i dont know if thats acceptable and if any1 knows feel free to comment.

also to share a little pcr trick i just learned: insted of writing "ALS on scene but did not ride" (assuming u r a BLS provider), write "ALS triage to BLS". if u write novels like me in my pcrs because i like detail incase i get "THE LETTER" to appear in court, little sentence cuts are good.

good topic. i actually learned some new abbreviations from ems-buff

  12. There is a department in Northern Westchester that goes to the High School to try and recruit new members.  I understand that the head of the membership committee goes with a trunk full of candy.

around my neck of the woods we do the same. starting out in the K-5th graders. thats where the candy and coloring books start. then the middle school where you can teach kids cpr and begin to get them interested. and finnaly the high school and we have a high school students program so they can actually join if they like what they see

  13. is it just me or does any1 else see 1/2 of those guys not even wearing bunker pants? the LT. walks around in his coat and the old rubber boots and his helmet. no air pack, no gloves, no hood.

    good observations

even with the flaws in the show, it is real and it is a good show. this doesnt mean i like boston or anything, i am a yankee fan

  14. time to clear this up.

CONSOLIDATED ENGINE COMPANY IS NOT DISBANDED! believe me i know, i am a member there. we are currently being housed on the top of sheldon avenue at the intersection of medow street and sheldon. it is a trailor for our meetings and a shed for our truck (1994 E-One Pumper). any fellow firefighter that would like to come by, i will personally give u a tour of our quarters. just let me know when u have 2 1/2 minutes, because thats all it will take.

WASHINGTON ENGINE HAS THE JAWS OF LIFE?!

for the past 10 (yes i said 10 t-e-n) years Engine 77 has carried the jaws on its aparatus and responds to the nys thruway and tapanzee bridge. i do not know where "rreimund" gets his information but since he is a fellow TFD member, i will cut him some slack on this 1. just letting u guys know, washington engine (E-78) carries the air bags that assist E-77 on extrications. i am a little offended that a member of my department dident know what each trucks role is. sorry chris498 that u were misinformed. if u get trapped in your car in tarrytown Engine 77 will be the 1 cutting u out, never ever ever ever ever Engine 78

  15. from what i read, people who are posting "119 will make for a quicker response time to the village" live absolutly no where near tarrytown. statistics from E-77 show that the 9 members living on sheldon avenue and browning lane respond to 89% of the alarms. where the old firehouse was would b a 1-2 minute response time from page to the truck being on the road and responding. taking the truck away from sheldon avenue and up to 119 where there is a light at the top of medow street, and a light at the jug handle on broadway leading to 119 would make for a response time of 5-6 minutes. those figures are just to get the truck on the road and responding, getting to the scene depending on where the call is would obviously take a longer time. any firefighter knows 5-6 minutes when a person is trapped in a car and not breathing, or on the 3rd floor of a structure with no exit seems like an eternity to the victem. to make this clear, E-77 quarters are not being built on sheldon avenue, they are being RE-BUILT where it rightfully belongs. also this company has been living in a trailer for the past 4 years. meetings, holiday parties, and snow watch have all been spent feeling like red neck trash of tarrytown. i am fed up with it. somebody said before that you can only "take pride in your double wide for so long" well they are right. i want a fire house, and i want it now. this is not consolidated engine crying like a baby that they want their fire house, these are men tired of sitting in a meeting and having a trailor shake everytime a truck goes by on the NYS thruway. enjoy your firehouses ladies and gentleman, because one day you might be in this situation and be just as pissed off as i am.

p.s. firecapt32, u shouldent say things unless u r sure wut you are saying is the truth
