  1. Hello all. I found this post and had to comment. I'm Pete's grandson. And Phil's son. (Phil Jr.) It's so true that so many establishments close or go out of business. Pete's (and Bronxville) has been a wonderful part of my families lives. My grandfather started it 76 years ago. My dad eventually took it over. And I'm happy to say... this time around the economy and squeezing of the little guy had nothing to do with it. Although no doubt, with so many restaurants/bars/delis/bagel places/coffee shops/Starbucks, etc opening up over the years in Bronxville— Pete's has had lots of competition.

After 46 years of working in, running, and eventually owning Pete's— my dad decided to retire. He sold the business to a fine group of people. They will be keeping the Pete's name, and the family feel that made Pete's successful for so long. And hopefully, helping keep a bit of the legacy alive in their own way.

Hey Phil thanks very much for posting here. It is good to hear that the name and the bar will carry on. Is there a date that Pete's will be "changing hands." Would love to be there.

  2. Hoping someone can help me with this.

I recently found a cb/walkie talkie in my closet that I haven't used in many years. I thought that I might try to sell it but when I opened it up it unfortunately still had AA batteries in it that obviously had leaked.

Once the batteries have leaked into the compartment, does that mean the radio is ruined or can it be cleaned out? If so, how do I clean it? There is hard, encrusted residue all over the battery connections.

    Thanks in advance......

    Bill

  3. There have been numerous occasions when STAT Flight was requested unnecessarily. You would really have to look at the specifics of each case to determine what made the request unnecessary. In my own personal experience, you can break it down into 3 categories.

The first category would be the "playing it safe" category. This is when an EMS provider fails to do a complete and accurate examination of the patient and simply goes by the perceived severity of the incident. The medevac request protocol should really serve as a guide, and some EMS providers base their requests on the protocol without using common reasoning. I have usually found that non-EMS providers who request a medevac typically fall into this category as well. They pull up to the scene of a horriffic MVA. They focus on the mangled cars, and not the patients, and immediately request a medevac before EMS conducts any kind of a physical exam to determine if a medevac is really necessary. I have cancelled STAT Flight on a few occasions because after conducting an exam of the patient, they were determnined them to be stable, and found there was no reason why the patient could not be transported by ground.

The second category is the "misdiagnosis" category. This would be when an EMS provider does conduct an exam of a patient and believes that there may be internal or hidden injuries which require an expedited means of transportation to the hospital. You can't fault the EMS provider if it turns out the patient has only minor injuries since the basis for the medevac decision was based on how the patient presented to the provider and their belief that expediting transport via a medevac would be the most beneficial means for the patient.

The third category is the "glory" category. Incidents where the helicopter is called because the requesting individual thinks the helicpoter is "cool" or it will make a great photo op for us to hang on our wall. Unfortunately these individuals do exist, and present a serious misuse of resources.

I think that medevacs do have their place in Westchester County, especially in the northeast part of the county where accessing major highways that lead to the Medical Center is more difficult then other parts of the County. STAT Flight can also be useful during prolonged incidents, such as pin jobs, where they are already on scene, so once the patient is extricated, they can be immediately placed into the waiting helicopter and immediately transported to WMC.

My thinking was really along the lines of your "playing it safe" category and that it seemed that in some cases that's exactly what was happening; lets call for it "just in case." Now with the extra flight distance, that's the part that has changed the thinking of some. Glad to hear that you're willing to cancel the helicopter when not necessary.

I won't even get into the "glory" category. That would start something that would probably get the thread shut down.

  4. Correct me if I'm wrong about this but it seems that there has been a definite decrease in the use of the helicopter in Westchester since Stat Flight left the Medical Center. Are there any numbers to back this up? There have been some discussions on these forums in the past about the use or misuse of helicopter landings and if there has been a decrease in calls for it, does this prove that it was sometimes being called when not really needed? Not criticizing anyone or any Department here just making an observation.

    Any opinions?

  5. Disgusting yeah, and a disgrace to the USMC. But I'm going to play Devil's Advocate for a little here, guys.

The 'girl' was pretending to be 15. Not 12 or 13 or even 14, 15. He could have done what he did, and a hell of a lot more, and it wouldn't have been a crime at all with a consenting 15 year old in many countries. And I'm talking about civilized Western countries with lower ages of consent, such as Canada, Germany, Spain, or France, not 3rd world failed states.

So, yeah he's disgusting, sleazy, creepy, call it what you like - it would be pretty damn sleazy even if it wasn't illegal. Yeah, I wouldn't want to have anything to do with him either, Tom. And yes as a father I reserve the right to be as hypocritical as I like when my own daughter turns 15! And yes it's a crime in NY. But just perhaps it's not as serious a crime as some are making out, if it wouldn't be a crime at all in other civilized countries? I can't take this too seriously... I'm damn sure a hell of a lot of those sex chat rooms are full of fantasists, someone claiming to be a teenage girl is probably a fat 60 year old guy who gets kicks from that. Or they could be a cop! rolleyes.gif Mr. Ritter needs to learn to think with his head, not his - he can't be too smart to get caught in a sting like that.

Please just tell everyone that you were kidding and trying to be funny and lets move on. You were kidding right?

  6. It was a pretty good game and a lot of fun. NHL needs to find a way to bring this to New York. A Ranger v Islander game outside at Yankee Stadium or Citifield (or anywhere else for that matter) would be incredible and great for the NHL and and NYC.

  7. Unfortunately, with the way money is with the State right now, I wouldn't expect anything to happen on that road anytime soon. Look how long it took just to get the DOT to pave the "bumpy road" section of the Taconic! By the way, Bear Mountain Parkway is another disaster waiting to happen. How there aren't more tragedies on that road is a small miracle.

  8. Hey I'm under 50 and I've had great times at Pete's! When I worked at the A&P, co-workers and I were there all the time for "liquid lunches." Bartenders were great guys and always had a beer ready before I got to the bar. Watched the Rangers win the Stanley Cup at Petes. One of the best nights ever!!

Man this is making me sad..........oh well. Have to stop in for old times sake. Anyone know exactly when its closing?

  9. To me, it's got to be really hard in an A-star because you can't see the skid tips. That's always nice when you're landing on a pinnacle. That pilot obviously has quite a bit of experience with moutain/canyon flying.

As for the crew, that's what training and experience will get you! You have to train for it and that looks like the ultimate practical exam.

What's the toughest landing you ever had to make?
