  1. Not to try and nitpick but 5 ambulances to cover all of the Town of Mt. Pleasant? That's a lot of stretching of resources I think. How could it work if a call drops in Pleasantville and the bus located there is on a call and the only available one is in Sleepy Hollow. Then, a call drops in Sleepy Hollow and their bus is on that job and a bus from Valhalla has to come cover. To me that doesn't make sense. Sleepy Hollow gets a lot of calls and might need two buses while let's say Hawthorne might only need one, just saying. No one knows the right number. I know what you're saying is just an estimate but just because some place else that is comparable in size has those capabilities, doesn't mean it can work in this equation. The communities are different in population size. One solution can't fix that. A solution for Hawthorne and Pleasantville might not work somewhere else. And about the flycars, if they were mentioned as Mt. Pleasant, those are more than likely new Transcare flycars because I know they have the designation as Mt. Pleasant Medics.
  2. They need to revamp that whole department. It definitely starts from the top down. The way things have been run are what has put the department in the position it sees itself today. I hope that with the new mayor and his hope to put the city on the right track, that that starts with a reboot of the fire department. It's not fair to neighboring communities that their fire service is put out of their jurisdiction for long periods of time to fight a fire in a city, where if they had the right number of manpower and equipment, they could probably handle most of those calls on their own.
  3. What can happen sometimes is that a driver might not be available during the 7a-7p to get that paid EMT to the call. The problem ends up being that people aren't around or don't show up to get the bus out.
  4. No, they are volunteer with paid EMT's from OVAC working the 7a-7p shift.
  5. Look, I'm not trying to be a Negative Nancy but you got to look at the situations at hand. Different communities, different paid providers, different village administrations. Not everybody is going to be happy happy about consolidation. People aren't happy with each other, let alone bringing four different agencies together. Is it possible to be done? Well, anything is possible with enough positive attitude and willpower. But, I don't see these four very different villages getting together to do this. Transcare just lost their contract in New Rochelle, Empress is gaining more ground in the county, and OVAC has a nice set up going with Sleepy Hollow. If you're truly saying money isn't an issue then God Bless because all I hear about is contracts here and contracts there. EMS is a business and business is always booming. No one is going to miss out on it if they are already in it. And if I'm not mistaken, Briarcliff Manor is technically part of the Town of Mount Pleasant so, are you saying they need to consolidate as well, even though they have a contract with OVAC as well? It can't be a pick and choose who joins or doesn't. It wouldn't make sense to have a "Mount Pleasant EMS" if not all of Mount Pleasant is involved. Just saying!
  6. Does anybody have an idea about what's going on with the MTA Police exam...I keep seeing it and hearing it mentioned but can't find anything on their official site.
  7. I know for the most part the Squad Company Second Pieces have had the International Cab.
  8. With things being the way they are these days, I don't know how successful a "Mount Pleasant" EMS would be. You already have three different BLS/ALS providers in some of those communities. There are already contracts with these groups and I highly doubt anybody wants to lose out on money. Sadly, that's what it comes down to these days, it's never about the needs of the community.
  9. So after reading the incident updates and seeing who was at the call in Ossining, it was definitely a job well done. My question is about the specialty units in the County. It's not about who was there and who wasn't, it's more about would the resources be available to the communities. If the incident were far worse and needed more HazMat units to respond, would Yonkers FD roll out to the call if requested? It's not a question of paid vs. vollies, but would they send out a full crew? I know they were requested and responded to Hawthorne with the Foam Unit almost a year ago. But, if I'm not mistaken they roll out Rescue 1 when a HazMat call goes out. Last week in Scarsdale that was the case. I'm just wondering if they would move that much manpower and resources all the way up county and leave the city without a rescue. I'm just wondering how the mutual aid and resources would work out in this case.
  10. How often do they hire for that job, if you know? I know I've seen it posted on here before but have always been confused thinking it was something else. Looks like not a bad place to work.
  11. If I'm not mistaken, aren't these guys volunteers? Either way, they do a hell of a job being able to cover GCT and perform the tasks they are asked to do in such a location. Cool rigs too!
  12. Or you could dispatch a Tarrytown Ladder that isn't far away and has an extra ladder to cover the village. Just because you want to stick "close by", doesn't mean your doing a better service. You might be actually doing a disservice to that jurisdiction, as in Montrose. Why would you take away their ladder that's covering their district when you have two ladders just 10 minutes away to the south. What it seems like is that there is still either this buddy buddy system when it comes to calling mutual aid or people haven't really taken into consideration what units are where and how it would actually affect that community. Distance does play a part for sure, but no reason in depleting a department's resources and then leaving them bone dry for them to catch a working fire. And trust me, no matter what, you will always get guys to staff a mutual aid call because everybody wants to lend a hand.
  13. Wise and true words from a truly wise firefighter and educator.
  14. Tarrytown FD Utility 61 has a cascade on it. Been called out a few times to help out at fires out in Irvington and Elmsford to name some instances.
  15. We're they mailed or are they online? Were*
  16. What is important to remember is that six people died that night and that can't ever be reversed sadly. But, the response to the scene and how things were conducted afterwards showed how well a major MCI can be handled. However, there is a certain level of truth to claims that there should be a review of how mutual aid and resources are called upon. I understand that people really appreciate having 60 Control be there dispatching source, but shouldn't the question be asked, where is there boundary? Also, what about being realistic about resources. I know people might still have issues with career and volunteers mixing but to be honest when you need resources sometimes you got to go with that option. Also, geography plays part in this matter. It isn't realistic calling departments from literally miles away to go to the scene or standby when you have resources closer by. This isn't about being picked first in dodgeball or getting to say "we were there". That's foolish to think like that. This is just being realistic. The IC did a good job that night and those who were on the ground did a great job too. This issue shouldn't take away from their efforts. There is nothing wrong with just reviewing for next time and hoping that an incident like this won't happen again.
  17. Thanks!
  18. Does anybody know how much the exam is? Just want a heads up before I pick up an app.
  19. Did anybody receive that other letter that Stamford was suppose to send out with the date and time and location? The only thing I have is that study packet still.
  20. Has anybody heard back yet from Stamford regarding the exam? I sent my paperwork in a few weeks ago and I still haven't heard back yet. And I'm pretty sure the exam is on the 10th.
  21. How often do their departments respond to Technical Rescue calls? That's a good chunk of change, hopefully it won't just be sitting in their houses not being used.
  22. I think across the board everybody should have training, whether they are an officer or not. Training is key to have a fully functional fire department, one that can operate efficiently, safely, and in a professional manner. I think it's ridiculous when guys just get put to a job because of who they know and not because of earning the job through hard work and commitment to wanting to better themselves and their fellow firefighters in fire service matters. Not everybody should be an officer, but that doesn't mean you can't grow and do your best to earn the title, to show people that this guy wants to lead the way for the right reasons and wants to give what knowledge he has back to his guys and learn more with them. That I think is what defines a good leader on the fireground. Popularity is all cool but how much is popularity going to help you when the crap is hitting the fan fast. What I think these departments need to realize is that the "Good Ol' Boy" system of years prior is gone and a new era has drawn in where skill, experience, and dedication to the betterment of the service is what's important.
  23. Westchester County Airport has a few battalions come in from around the county if an incident were to occur. I'm not trying to say what the PAPD does now is a bad job. They have been doing a great job since they took on the role many years ago. The guys who are on the job now are trained and have been doing it for a while but all I was saying is that with what the PAPD is going through right now it might be a bit of a bruise on the situation. I'm not saying they shouldn't be firemen or that they need another department. All I was saying is that it might not look good for them with the situation they are in.
  24. I'm sorry about that sir, I wasn't sure but I didn't mean to doubt what you know, I thought you were being serious.
