  1. If you took the test you should be able to get hired. But keep in mind they will exhaust all residents before they hire non residents That is usually how it works.
  2. This happened on May 30 1973, . I was 5 years old at the time. I remember hearing the explosion and then my house shook for about 3 minutes, and I was about 3 miles away from it. The SS Esso Brussels & SS Sea Witch collided Just North of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge then drifted under the bridge while still on fire. I remember one of the boats was pushed to the shore line after the fire was "put out" it sat there for weeks smoldering about 25 feet from land. The lower level of the bridge was closed for weeks, and then opened and closed for repairs for a few years due to this. This is possibly the biggest Maritime Incident in NYC history. Here is a link with some info http://wikimapia.org/10471086/SS-Esso-Brussels-SS-Sea-Witch-Collision-Site and a pic of that night. Does anyone remember this or any other major Maritime Incident in NY .
  3. Think if this happened today. With the size of the tankers and cargo ships now. But now with technogly the way it is, how preventable is an incident like this? Pushing terrorism aside. Is thier a high chance for it to happen again. I don't know if Maritime incidents back then did lessons learned. But I would love to see this report.
  4. I remember a certain VAC Capitan telling me a 20 min response time is very acceptable.
  5. When helicopper, alsfirefighter, and ny10570 got banned it would be hard to log in.
  6. Never claimed to be an expert it was all IMO and based off the article, and looks like a final outcome is coming, states they may be back to work in March.
  7. Why does this have to be Bull, This happens in many different jobs. If it is true they are lucky they were not fired. There is no mention of them fighting this or any Union involvement, and they have been suspended for a month already. So it may be true.
  8. They had an interesting segment during last years Super Bowl pre game show about this. The Air Force said they do one or two practice runs to make sure they have the timing down for the end of the National Anthem. These practices and the fly over it self are scheduled during training missions or non war missions to save money.
  9. ok then must of been a New York City thing back in the day
  10. Please correct me if I am wrong here. But doesn't NYS protocol state that two people have to be in an ambulance while responding to call such as EMT and a Driver or EMT and EMT. As far as I remember that ambulance is out of service and can not respond to calls with one person on board.
  11. Great video we use it when we teach ICS 300
  12. One article I read stated that they trained one month ago on this in the same terminal and that they had medics going in with police pulling out the wounded while they were still looking for the shooter. I don't understand why train one way and do it different when the real thing happens. Granted I don't understand if there was reasons why this didn't happen.
  13. Interesting, I don't put much stock in as many people who post there names to just as many who don't post there names, I also find just as many sh!t stirrers from both sides. But that's the way I see it just as you see it your way.
  14. Don't forget the Mail Man, also Crossing Guards and Teachers. Teachers are getting assaulted all the time. Then again thinking about it lets arm the students also because the more we arm them the less chance they will get assaulted. Now, think how stupid this is and when you come up with your answer, apply it to arming EMTs and Fire Fighters.
  15. To be honest you could put the whole Army in the check point. If someone is going to walk in and shoot someone or a few people you are not going to stop it. How long do you think it will take to shoot up a terminal. Not very long at all they only need ten minutes if that much. People who are going to do this are not looking to get away with it. They know they are going to die. Look at an Airport like HPN. how much time does someone need to shoot that place up. Look at the Que line there. You just have to walk in with an Automatic weapon and start shooting. Look at the Main terminal at LGA. how often do you see PAPD next to a check point. The avg response time at LGA for PAPD is more then 5 mins. how much time is needed to shoot up a check point, or the que line waiting to get into the check point. This is one of the things that is not going to be stopped unless there is an armed person standing there waiting for it, and hopefully that LEO gets the jump on the person because if not, its going to be a very long day.
  16. That's not true, food is cheaper and so are cars. There is a big difference is gas prices. It's just overall a lot cheaper across the mason Dixon.
  17. Thought it was pretty boring
  18. I have to agree with PEMO, I never really grasped why every call there has to be a notification. Perhaps I too am use to working in the City. I remember one of my first calls here in Westchester was an MVA in Phleps drive way, we pull into the ER and the nurse starts screaming at us that we didnt call in blah blah blah. I told her it happened in there drive way. She said it doesn't matter you still have to call. So I stepped outside and called from my cell phone and gave my report, they asked for an ETA I said the pt was already in there ER. I was told by the nurse that I was a smart a**.
  19. I think it will take a full collapse of the EMS system before anything will be done. This will include Hosptials in this also. IMO polticians do not care about front line EMS such as EMTs and Medics. Only time they do is during election time then we are forgotten. The truth of matter is people will find a way to the hosptial, It will take a collapse of care at the hosptial to happen before anything is done. Here in Westchester just wait until "The Big One" happens when there is a few hundred patents and many of them traumatic. Besides the EMS system here not being able to handle it, the bigger question is can the Hosptials here handle it. Can WMC handle a dozen trauma pts at one time. Can any hosptial handle this much. How many hospitals here can handle an extra 30-40 pts with various different injuries from one incident on top of there normal work load for the day. Like the last post form Westchester the whole EMS system is on the edge. I hope the collapse does not come while I am still living here.
  20. In the 90's at least CISD and EAP totally sucked in NYCEMS. If you suffered from depression you were treated like dirt. You were better of killing your self then having your peers help you. I hope to God it has improved, There are many good people in EMS that need help and just don't get it.
  21. Do you have minimal standard lighting on your vessel, or do you have extra lighting all around it, does your neighbors who dock there boat next to you all have extra lighting above the standard. The problem is there too many people who will not take responsibility for there actions. Too many people are saying the barge needs more lighting. Not implying anyone here has said that, but I don hear many people saying the dude was drunk and should of never been on the water. What the real shame is that some drunk killed a bride to be, and the best man. and chances are he will get a slap on the hand for this. The shame is that he will walk away with minimal time if any at all. The shame is that having a boating license or a drivers license is almost basically like having a license to kill. You opened it to this discussion when you posted your PS in your first post.
  22. I find it interesting how many people are blaming the barge in this incident, but yet those people do not seem to understand that the operator of the speed boat was drunk. They went to the restaurant were the bartender said it appeared that they were drinking before they got there, proceeded to have more drinks, then left on their boat and headed for Tarrytown most likely to drink some more. Meanwhile people say the lights on the barge are not bright enough, but yet I can seem them from Sleepy Hollow, and other people say they can see them from Piermont. Lets place blame were it belongs, To the Operator who was drunk piloting a speed boat at night, not the barge which was just sitting there being a barge lighted to US Coast Guard Standards. The construction company stated they will put more lights on the barges now, hmmm wonder how many people will complain now that it is too bright, and bring law suits for that.
  23. This may be off topic a bit, but about a year ago I was on 684 south bound, when i was cut off by a drunk driver. I called 911 and spoke to NYSP dispatcher. Who asked me if I could follow the driver at a safe distence but also not chase the car down. I followed the car giving info of what he was doing and location every so often when asked. I also heard in the back ground the dispatcher talking to a Trooper giving the info. after a few minutes of this I heard in the back ground the Trooper state he was in the the area. The dispatcher asked me what lane was I in and to put my flashers on, also to tell him how far the car was in front of me. I passed that info on and within 30 seconds the trooper flew past and nailed him. So my question is did the Dispatcher have the authority to ask me to do this, what happend if I crashed while doing this. I know I could of said no. For what ever reason I didnt.
