  1. I am interested in getting a good camera to use for taking photos of family, fires, apparatus, etc. I am wondering what type of camera would be good for taking the best quality photos. I have seen great photos on here, so if you have shared your photos, or know your photos are good quality, please post what type it is, where you can buy it, etc.

I know of one as of right now, which is B&H Photo: NYC

    Thank you!

    Ryan

like peterose said it depends on your budget, you can buy a top dollar body but if you dont match the glass to it you just pissed away money, your lenses are just as important as the body, i shoot w all nikon equipment so i cannot comment on canon personally but they as well make excellant equipment. for fire scenes i usually use my 70/200 2.8 on my d700, as well as my 50mm 1.8 on my d2xs, i have a few other lenses commonly used as well. feel free to check out my site to see some of my shots cdcphoto.com. as far as where to buy? Adorama is my first choice, ive used B&H as well both fine stores however i'd stay away from best buy circuit city and the likes they tend to be more expensive and dont offer the variety of kits and options. good luck with whatever you choose hope this helps

  3. I am sorry to all those who are being hosed. With that being said I don't know the particulars of all the details of the transition. As I understand employees will lose seniority but PTO will be paid up to a "max" allowance. Again if I am wrong please correct me. I also have to say the point of this thread is not to bash any employees or companies but to let our brothers and sisters here know that we are here for them. IF THIS BECOMES ANY TYPE OF BASHING I REQUEST THE THREAD BE THEN LOCKED! Again to all those I am sorry and I hope that T.C. does right by those with experience and knowledge of the areas they serve.

Let me explain what I mean... by "hosed" I mean having 6 weeks left at your place of employment after being there for "x" amount of years and having such short notice. IDNBY but 6 weeks is a relative short notice to figure where you are going to go - or what you are going to do... I have also heard from Alamo employees that those currently in Medic school will only have the current semester payed for.... and the rest is either whatever TC is going to do or, on their own. So I don't know about you but to me it would feel as if I was hosed.... and that is what I am referring to....

Anthony if youve been around ems for any number of years you would understand how and why these things happen. if anything its not TC thats hosing Alamo staff, it s more like if Alamo was run effectively and efficiently they would not have even been in a position to be bought out, such as sloper was in the past. i do not fault any of the staff of Alamo for the companies shortcomings but that of the mgmt. if you have followed the trend Alamo has been steadily losing contracts in the area, again not the fault of the staff they do what their told and do their jobs and do them quite well to boot, but the way the company was managed. while i was chief in a fd in the local area we had our share of problems with alamo, such as asking to be released from a working fire scene because they were told they needed to do a transport, or when i was on scene of a cardiac arrest awaitng an ambulance when i was given a 5 min eta, 17 min later the bus arrived, i was also told when they gave me the eta they were by raymond ave, [they passed my lt] again doin what they were told, and god knows they have there hands full in the city of pok. but any way i wish the best of luck to all who stay on with transcare, having worked for them in the past they are a decent company to work for. good luck to all no hard feelings anthony

  5. I wear it but I can see the argument of why some people don't. With all the new materials (of turnout gear) and protective equipment you can sometimes get too deep for your own good. I guess the logic is when you ears start burning its time to think about a way out.

or you can learn the signs of when its going to get bad and get out , personally i wear my hood and my earflaps, been burned befor, NOT FUN

  6. Amen Brother!

there is no reason for this to be a paid/volly issue. the fact is the kid screwed up, everyone makes mistakes, some more sever then otherr but none of us should throw stones. if hes found guilty let the courts deal with that, as well as the agency involved. as far as the comments on wasting taxpayers money by using an emergency vehiche for a food run, thats another story. as far as when i am at work i do my best to come to work prepared for my shift meals and all. occasionally i dont, or even if we feel like getting something different fo a meal we do take a department vehicle to the store food establishment etc. on my job i am expected to be able to respond at all times while on duty, so that means if i stop at the store returning from a run, or a detail etc. i am still ecpected to be ready to work. this aslo serves another purpose, it gets us out in the community in which we serve, meeting the residents, looking at buildings, picking up hints or problems that can/may arise if theres an emergency at that location. its called community involvement, preplanning, TRAINING! i cannot speak for other organizations but when me and my crew go out for whatever reason, yes even lunch, we discuss these things all the time. "hey joe did you see that new sign over the entrance to that store?"" Yeah bob that can be an issue if we have a fire there." Open your minds people its not all just a "JOYRIDE" this is my, yours and our lives here, paid and volly alike!

stay safe and watch out for each other, there are people out there not on our side!

  7. personally nikon for me nothing against canon never really ued them i got into nikon and loven them ever since. just got rid of my d70s a nice little starter, only lthis past thursday to be exact. i have a d80 and have just got the d300 so the 80 will now be my backup or second. my brother in law has the d50, no complaints just too small for me. whicever brand or camera you chose to go with just do your research, not only on the brand but options as well. not sure if the d40, d60 or d90 have the avalable options as the d80, d300 and others have. all in all good luck in your search and best of luck with whichever one you choose.

  8. while i have no objections to people volunteering in their local respective departments if that is indeed availabe as an option, i do also understand the need to go to a neiboring department if that is the only option to be a volunteer, and as everyone involved in the fire service in and around dutchess county knows that the volunteer departments are a huge part of what makes up the fire service in the county. after reading this article however this seems like nothing more than someone who just wants to be a "big city fireman". this is not meant to dis respect anyone, but if you need to go to arlington, fairview, roosevelt etc to volunteer than do so and accept it, be grateful you can get the training knowledge and experience they are willing to gove you. if this guy wants in the city that bad, TAKE the TEST and get on the job. just my 2 cents

  9. there was one occupant in the house while first in crews made an agressive search of the fire floor the occupant who was sleeping downstairs, was awakened by all the commotion he heard above him walked out of the basement and was eventually transported to the hospital
