  1. I would just like everyone to know that I will be covering the sales district of Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess counties. We represent Smeal pumpers, tankers, aerials as well as SVI rescue trucks and boats. We also are now selling Fastlane command and response vehicles. Good luck to Yonkers, Mt Kisco, Wassaic and Port Chester on their recent purchases. If I can be of assistance to anyone feel free to e-mail me at tl2l31@yahoo.com.

Good luck..., however, they sell advertising space on the main page...

  2. From 2003-2005, the Dover Fire Department here in Dutchess County hosted an Extrication Competition each year. About 7-10 or so teams signed up/were invited each year.

An unnamed FD cleaned house all 3 years. In 2006, Dover chose to host a live fire event/competition instead of the extrication competition. No word on why.

The biggest reason why was because the turnaround time on setting up a new "accident" and the cleanup from the previous evolution took too long and it was limited to 6-8 teams due to time constraints, it was suggested to do a "Fire" event/competition to allow more teams to sign up, but as it turned out, the same 6 or 7 departments showed up.

  3. It's a mid 80's vintage. 228 was probably it's old number before Dutchess renumbered units back in 89-90??

Wassaic is just above Wingdale if I remember right.

The 3 digit number was a civil defense number i believe, there were a few departments used those numbers for awhile until the mid 80's, then Dutchess County used a very informal system until the current numbering system was put in place,(engine 1,2, Car 1,2, Rescue 1,2 etc...) you had to say your FD name ahead of the unit you had and alot of times with repeater transmissions the first part of the transmission was cut off and all the dispatcher heard was ...engine 1 responding, and that could have been anybody, so the new numbering system has helped. Wassaic is above Dover Plains, in the Town of Amenia, last stop on the Metro North line.

  4. I'm not really sure who built that body originally but i believe it waqs refurbished once as well, they replaced it with a 3000 gal tanker made by Smeal on an International chassis and yes it's blue, they have 2 other engines (i think they are both Pierce??) and a small rescue (Rescue 1) all blue like the photo you have, they are a smaller FD and yes there bunkers are blue as well.

  5. We have them in our hydrant bags and use them now instead of the steamer.  As far as putting them on as a permanent fixture, are they welded or just attached?  Id be concerned someone would take it and leave us in s^&$# creek without a paddle.

There is a two piece adapter made with set screws on the part that attaches to the hydrant which at least makes the vandals have to get some tools, and then the FD wrench is needed for the cap, some departments i know are getting monies throught their town/village water departments and installing them on all of their hydrants.

  6. Well it's easy to blame E-One here, but honestly the transfer case, engine, pump, and transmission aren't parts that are built by E-One, they are built by Hale, Cat, Allison and their competitors.

On the other hand, blaming E-One for using crappy body parts, poor fit and finish, sub-par wiring, and shotty paint, etc. is well within reason.

On another E-One note, they build their own ladders both steel and aluminum.... Does anyone know if they've ever had a manufacturer related issue that has resulted in a aeriel device failure?

There is one thing i'm sure of, E-One has NEVER had a catastrophic failure OR a tip over of one of their aluminum built aerials, the steel you mentioned could only be their Bronto product which is built in Finland and the Fire Apparatus part of Bronto has been a part of E-One since the late 90's (approx.) with no known failures. I'll give you the paint issues from the past etc... I guess LFDR1 would know why E-One (if it was indeed one) was to blame for aging equipment supplied by another vendor would have caused the rig to do whatever it did...

  7. So I'm curious as to what people's oppnions are about leather and plastic helmets. What do you like better? and what are the pros and cons?

The Cairns N5A(leather) with Bourke shields is probably the most popular out there, however the downside is with that eyewear configuration that helmet does not meet NFPA, you would have to add a set of goggles to it.

  8. NO WAY!! Ive been waiting for this for years! I used to love chips when i was in grade school, X365, i know exactly what youre talking about... Ill never forget waking up at 7am all though elementary school to watch it.  Nice!!!

AND WE WERE CONCERNED ABOUT PARADE THREADS ???????

  9. Cutters Edge markets its Black Star Diamond blade.  I haven't used it on wood even though they advertise it for concrete, steel, metal, brick, wood or aluminum.  Its really amazing taking it from rebar reinforced concrete to steel and back and forth without a worry.  Its kinda expensive but it will last 50:1 of standard rescue multi cut abrasive wheel.  So in the long run its a huge savings.  If you're in NY contact Garrison Fire & Rescue for a demo you won't be disappointed.

MES-NY as well, Cutters Edge dealer... The Diamond blade seems to be doing very well.

  10. I don't have that yet, seems like a great idea, i do have a question about the lens you mentioned, is that the one on their website for around $ 500.00, i bought a Canon Rebel XTI (I think that it's the latest version) for my wife, and she is requesting more zoom, i think the one you mentioned would work alot better that what we have.

  11. I hope someone will send in some shots of the rescue posed to EMTBravo.

What will be the disposition of the current E-134?

PFD will be getting training this week on the new apparatus and i'm sure we will get some good photos outside, there were pictures taken yesterday at the delivery, i'm not sure who will be sending the photo's in, as for the current 134 that is being taken in as a trade-in by a used apparatus dealer through the dealer that sold the new 134. Hope this helps.

  12. Ahh ALS, I see you're being your usual sarcastic self. I can assure you my brothers in Peekskill have they're stuff together and aren't going to let that apparatus go online until all the details are worked out. I had the opportunity to see the new rig myself and it's design, as well as all the equipment placement, is well thought out.... it is truly an impressive apparatus.

Since you're a driver in Peekskill, I can tell you right now you're going to like the shorter wheel base and easier turning raduis as well as the 500+ horsepower engine. You also know the old 134 is on it's last legs and the new one couldn't arrive at a better time. I personally can't wait to see it on the street.

The new 134 will be at Fire Patrol Saturday morning.

  13. In addition to being Chief in Ardsley in the early 1980's, I worked at Indian Point.  I worked with Ed for about 12 years.  My role in the event of an emergency at Indian Point was to respond to the State Emergency Operations Center (located in the sub-basement of the State Police building) and be the Technivcal Advisor to the State.  In addition to being very competant, Ed was a true gentleman.

I got to know Ed through the Fire service and he was a true Gentlemen, i spent a couple of years in Clove Valley while i was building my house and my family used to buy Christmas Trees from Ed & his wife who sold them from their property in Union Vale. Great man and he will be missed by many.

  14. Dutchess Undersheriff dies

Poughkeepsie – Dutchess County Undersheriff J.J. Thompson died Sunday following a long illness. He was 55.

Sheriff Adrian Anderson and he knew each other during their entire professional careers and Anderson said he will be missed.

“We had a lot of good times together and he did an awful lot for Dutchess County and the men and women in law enforcement here,” said the sheriff.

Thompson was a resident of Red Hook.

County Executive William Steinhaus has directed all county government facilities to fly their flags at half mast to honor Thompson. “We are all saddened by the loss of our friend and co-worker,” Steinhaus said.

Thompson served in the sheriff’s office for 34 years; he became Undersheriff in 2000.
