We have our own policies & procedures, as well as the SOGs from the departments we dispatch that we must follow. Should we have a reason to deviate from one of these, in plain English - we better have a damn good reason for doing it, and be prepared for any questioning or backlash.
Good dispatchers and Supervisors have that ability to know something needs to happen. For example, if a call is coded in EMD as BLS but the dispatcher/call taker has a gut feeling that ALS is warranted, it might get dispatched. The best thing we can do is prompt responding units of info we've received so they hopefully get the wheels going to call for more stuff.
Today, we were responding to a reported kitchen fire. 60 Control notified us that PD was on scene with a working house fire. Being 10-15 seconds away, I called the 10-75 on arrival, but if I was a couple of minutes out, I would of made that request while still responding.
Good dispatchers and good Supervisors are more than their computers.

Sorry for jumping in so late in the discussion. but irish fire is right. I was on the job for 34 years and went to schools, seminars, etc. right up to the time I retired. Some of us go to these classes just to get certificates and unfortunately forget the course material in a week or two. On the other hand, you could have irishfire's attitude: Learn it from those who have been there> remember it> and put it in your back pocket because you might need it some time in the future when you least expect it. It should also come out of that back pocket every now and then for a review. Irishfire, Tommy Brennan would be proud of you.
And Barry: Mofire is young. Don't jump on him when he asks a question. All your information is absolutely correct, but as soon as you jumped on his case, you turned him off.
Cids (or whatever you may call buildings' info database) is a very time consuming effort and takes a lot of work by all members of a FD to initiate and then to keep current. Not a knock, but it is something that volunteer FDs just don't have the time or people to devote.
Everyone, paid or vol should find time to do company inspections, at least of your area's target hazards if nothing else. Wouldn't it be nice if your first time in a building is during a company inspection as opposed to 3an on your hands and knees?
And about that back pocket irishfire talked about...It's like a magic pocket. No matter how much "stuff" you put in it, it never gets full.
There...you got my two cents. Take it to heart and it may be worth a lot more to you

With the latest EMail from the county about the shortage of PCR in the State do to the budget problem. Who has though about switching over to the EPCR Computers as a method. Would this be easier for some departments. What Departments have them, and how are the members reaction to using them (Like/Dislikes).
I for one would like to start using the EPCR, only becasue it self checks your work and will not let you finish your PCR until everything is completed. Dont have to worry about sloppy hand writing(Like Mine) For one that would make QA/QI so much easier. And for the Last part while waiting for the Next Job you can always log on to EMTBRAVO. J/k
Would like to see peoples thought on this from Depts that do have them and depts that dont and why?
