  1. 1. There was probably more plywood on the walls than on top of the floor joists where it should have been...The section of floor which collapsed into the basement was a mere layer of wainscoting (1/8" veneer wood paneling) covered by tile as was sections of the 2nd floor where the fire had burned threw. The second floor was not tiled at all and just had a wood panelling covering the floor joists. Always know what your crawling over! wait ??? your saying that the kitchen floor with all that stainless steel units was supported by a 1/8" wood board and tile ??? come on now, ??? really ??/ ... I do not see how the floor could support a 90 pound waitress... from what I understand the kitchen floor burned through from the heavy fire load and natural gas feed.... but I have seen allot of poor construction out there.. so you never know..
  2. I was impressed that it was Cook and not the Con Ed Vac, either way it was great... A question ? maybe someone knows... they were there pretty quick, were they working nearby ?? were they requested by local FD ? Local PD ? or were they notified that by their office with a trench collapse in their area, to break and go there in case.... would be nice to know how it happened... Which ever the case, thank you Cook for showing up...
  3. When you really think about it, there should of been at least one additional engine on this job, ... for a second fill site for the Tankers... one of the general rules of thumb I have learned, ( 3 tankers can work off of 1 fill site, 4 - 6 tankers should have 2 fill sites. ) so with this in mind, there should of been another engine on the list... * newsbuff - tell you what, you start on 1 side of BCR and I'll come in from the other end with T 10 and you tell me its really a 2 lane road... * johnnyov - your incident debriefing, it might be helpful to invite some of the key members of the different areas of this call... ( the fill site, tanker off load site, and fire ground ) so that you can see points from different views... plus, I am sure its not going to be the last time we work together, so it could help get us all on the same page or provide us with a different method of operating... * jflynn - on several other topics you have mentioned, that you do not know much about tanker operations, which is understandable, and if you ever wish to attend on of the Croton / Yorktown / Millwood yearly tanker drills, we would love to have you there and open up to any ideas you may have... let me know and I will gladly email you when we do our next... * bnechis - you did attend our last CYM tanker drill and you did bring up some good points, one thing I took from your comments, lead Croton to get a 5 inch gated Wye, and because the tanker site was on a hill side, with no level areas near by, we tossed the ponds on the side of the road and went with the gated Wye and had 2 tankers nurse to the relay pumper, which worked out great.. thanks Barry. * 99subi - most of the tankers in this area carry around 3000 gallons... - as far as the worries about there being 100 FF on this job, WOW thats great... I know every single resident I spoke with, who were trying to get home or out for some reason we gald so many people were there to help out... I think it says allot of the system up here in Northen Westchester... it may not be the best, but it does work. ....... AND YORKTOWN, THIS DID NOT COUNT AS YOUR YEARLY TANKER DRILL, ITS YOUR TURN FOR THIS YEAR...
  4. Interesting structure, can it be a problem ??? sure, but thats the job of the local FD to get out and know the buildings it covers... You can not know eveything, and know how each was built, but a general knowledge can go a long way... As far as it being dilapidated why would you say that ??? it looks well built.. yeah the porches look scarey but from the picture they all look structurely stable and straight... the paint looks fresh as there are not stains from water wear, so maybe the owner takes care of the building... Plus its an older building and most of them were over built, not like the homes of today... Face it, this is the area we live in, the Hudson River Valley, things were built on steep slopes and many things are not as they appear... bottom line is we need to get to know our areas, remind everyone of floors which are " below " the ground floor, and the Engineering Depts. need to make sure structures are sound... My biggest fear is that Cape house which is loaded with years of memories and junk...
  5. Sadly, when the sh*t hit the fan, the contractor paniced and did nothing to control the scene.... E119 was allowed to pull up Brook Street, about 20 - 24 ft parallel from all three primaries. Plus the grassy area under the broken pole and downed power lines, normally used for parking of a local auto repair shop, was wide open and members started parking their cars there... The contractor never tried to stop or warn anyone of what was going on in the area... Only after getting set up, and turning on all E119 scene lights, did anyone inform us the truck which snapped the pole, had primaries on it, was still in gear and energized... Once we found out the issues of this call, all members staged across the street until the contractor told us the lines were disconnected... Then we proceeded with putting out the car fires.. But it was still not over, as soon as a Con Ed offical was on the site, we were informed the disconnect of the lines were just a quick fix, and we were still in danger of the downed lines being re energized.... so again we backed off... So, becareful of all these contractors helping out after the storms, they are NOT Con Ed, and may not operate as we are used to, with Con Edison....
  6. Discussing the events of a recent call, talking about ways which could of made the run smother or safer, opening other people’s ( or my ) eyes to other opinions, thinking outside the box and looking at it from another stand point is one of the things I believe have helped me and the guys from WECO, that I have worked with for years… How is this toxic ??? what I believe, what is really toxic is the guy who believes “ what I do is right and that’s that !! “ and can not take criticism from other’s who may have done it differently…I have found the guys with an OPEN MIND, are the best ones to work with, and together a team can excel. One of the major problems which can come from this, is just how someone brings it up, if it is NOT broadcasted properly, it will come across as an insult, and part of being an adult, is that we learn to listen to others and respect others feelings…. I am not 100 % sure, but I believe this is what JFlynn always means when he says QTIP… and I have started to agree with this…. We need to stop being babies and man up…. ( no disrespect to the ladies out there … )
  7. nice pictures, thanks.... subs are in the water right ??? does the FD have any fire boats?
  8. I see your point, but it sounds more like the " what if " game.. we all can second guess everything to death... Its is the sad state of the world we live in today, if something happens, it is always someone elses fault... never the person behind the wheel ... The example you use, in my book, would be your fault for allowing a friend to use your boat, past its capablities... plus fault should be on the operator for not making sure the boat was safe for his party... NOT the local PD who checked the boat out the week before, when your family was using it... by using this train of thought, every PD agency should check a boat everytime it leaves the dock, as all the elements can change... I do see your point, heli., but there needs to be a happy middle point here...
  9. With all of the new electric tools the PD has today ( Plate readers, laptops in cars ) someone should invent something similiar to the plate readers, so a PD unit can scan markings on a boat and be able to see when it was last inspected for a safety check. If it was performed say within the last 2 months, then the PD patrol unit can leave them be, unless there was cause for them to be stopped... I respect the job these PD units are trying to do, but I can also see the point of the boaters... there should be a level playing field here.
  10. after seeing many local firehouse jobs and school projects, wait and see when its done... sounds like a fluff piece...
  11. WOW.... the old girl looks really good.... I thought it just fell apart after we got rid of it, at least thats what it sounded like happen.... any other pictures would really be enjoyed by some of us Croton guys... as a kid my dad was a member of R18 and I remember putting in many hours cleaning and putting it back together after calls.... thanks..
  12. might have to pull the engine outside before putting on the chains.... nice looking rig, good luck to those who use it...
  13. aaaaa was it a trapped fish ??? what was the call... very hard to figure out... good pictures.
  14. I don't know, but it sure sounds like Briarcliff is going to Ossining allot for Mutual aid EMS...
  15. I am probably the only one here that does not know the reason why, but what did it hit, or got hit by ??? the photos show some force damage....
  16. although not in the chain of command, I did question some workers( Metro North guys ) at this scene and several mentioned that they had chocked both sets of rear wheels to this train... so even if we did not do it, it was performed... well so they said...
  17. sure its for fire fighting..... its really for crowd control...
  18. I'm surprised that the parents don't try to sue the city, for defective swings...
  19. I agree with you 100%... people should grow up and be responsible for their actions PERIOD .....
  20. we are still waiting to hear back from Metro North on this type of training, but do you have any pictures of where you say to put these wedges...basically we set up the air bags under the " cow catcher " and were able to move this structure up 2 inches...
  21. time to clean house and get rid of all of them...show them the chair across the street.
  22. wow, as an appartus driver, this was sad... smart to let him go..
  23. YES, it really seems like the locals screwed this one up.... the lack of preplanning once their water rescue training was cut out of the budget, was a huge mistake.... I read the Firehouse article, and from this story, they blew it... http://www.firehouse...ever-asked-help
