As long as fire departments and ambulance corps go 3 and 4 and 5 dispatches and response times are upwards of 15 minutes there will have to be a discussion of alternatives. And that will always include weighing the pros and cons of paid/combination departments/agencies and their all volunteer counterparts. In my eyes, it would defeat the purpose of this very forum if we didn't discuss the issue when applicable. When the issue has to be discussed, it needs to be frank, respectful (that doesn't mean sugarcoating the facts) and thoughtful by all.
Very well put. While I agree the issue could be handled better. As long as people have passion about what they do it will continue to be a heated debate. There should be no reason for personal attacks, at the same time people should be allowed to express there opinion. If you do not agree with other people it is your right to express your opinion. To say we should sweep a very real issue under the carpet is just plain wrong. If you don't like the way a topic is going stop reading it and do not post in it, the topic will die quick if it is ignored.

Post Rd. bridge is currently the furthest north. There is still a stretch of 95 to be completed approx. Midland Ave to the state line. When this area is rebuilt there will be two more dry hydrants added (fingers crossed) Midland Ave and Grace Church St. The problem with the system as it is, no one is taking responsiblity for the maintenance of the system.
-
So if the dry hydrants were functioning why the need for a 300' hand stretch? The fire was at mile marker 14 +/- and the closest dry hydrant is at the Boston Post Rd overpass that is at mile marker 13.5+/-. 300 foot hand stretch beats 1/2 mile lay any day in my book.
-
Were they anywhere near the dry hydrants located on the highway? Are they operational? The closest dry hydrant would be Boston Post Rd. As for the second question the short answer is yes, although they have never been used since being installed

Rye Engine 191 hand stretched 300 feet of 5 inch down embankment into office park and hit a yard hydrant there. They then supplied themselves and a Port Chester engine with water.

Rye is getting a new Chiefs car it will be a Crown Vic. Last I heard the car was "lost" no one seems to be able to locate it(if that makes any sense). Rye is also replacing its current Fire Prevention vehicle the new one is a Ford Escape Hybrid I believe this has been delivered to public works and is being outfitted.

How come every time there is a fire in the area of Rye or in Rye a mutual aid issue comes up. Whats the deal do you miss us or is it that you feels sorry for us. Which every the case is it is nice to know every one cares so much about us. Maybe if everyone would have a few more fires we could come and join the party ( just let us know what to bring).

Why would a police officer/firefighter/emt or who ever want to assume the liability of canceling another department. I can understand advising any incoming units of what you have. Once another department is dispatched it should be up to that departments IC how to handle that call.

I know that they parked a engine on the broadwalk to draft I have never heard of a truck falling through. I have heard that someone sat on the hard suction hose (in the water) for hours to maintain the draft. I will ask around about a truck falling through. There also used to be some amazing photos(not sure which Playland fire). They were taken down during the remodel and have not reappeared.

Anyone have any pics of the Christmas Eve fire on Irving Ave in the late 80's early 90's. That was another "big one".

What happened to last years minutes? This is going to sound bad but what have they done, what are they doing? Do they serve a purpose or is just for show? It would seem to be a good place to work through some issues, float some ideas that have been put fourth here and other places. I do not know just kinda thinking out loud. Thoughts anyone?

Looking through the DES web page it still has the Fire Advisory Board up but it shows the last meeting as having been a year ago. Does the board still meet, or for that matter even exist. If you look at the make up of the board it looks fairly diverse and maybe would have been a good place for the consolidation topic to be taken to. Anybody no what the deal is.

Stench you are 100% correct on that. Wasn't this fire that Ryes ladder 26 iced over so bad that they drove it back to Rye semi raised? I think they were able to retract it all the way just not able to bed the ladder?

We do not have exclusivity in Rye. We have tried talking this point but it falls on deaf ears. You should have been there when asked them to think about a quint, instead of a 2nd straight stick.
The real point of this letter was to point out how poorly the city is running its public safety. The PD has some big issues and have taken votes of no confidence in both the Police Commissoner and the City Manger. The letter was sent to back up our brothers in the PBA. I am not saying we don't need more manpower just that the paper took it in the direction they wanted to get the best headline. The study recommends doing alot of things that they do not even mention, some of the recomendations are a lot harsher then hiring 4 career firefighters.
