  1. The unfortunate truth behind not putting them all on a single engine is probably that they'd have to give up exclusivity when it comes to operating the rigs. It's a business decision, not a safety issue. It's sad, but you can't blame it on the union. In many combo departments, the moment exclusivity is given up, some idiot politician or anti-career volunteer will advocate cutting staffing levels to save money. Remember, we take pride in our job and love helping the community, but this is how we put food on the table and we can't jeopardize that. We all want to be safe, but we shouldn't have to risk our jobs to make a point. Not to mention that you'd still have the same amount of men showing up to an alarm as before the consolidation, not exactly what I'd call an increase in safety.

We do not have exclusivity in Rye. We have tried talking this point but it falls on deaf ears. You should have been there when asked them to think about a quint, instead of a 2nd straight stick.

The real point of this letter was to point out how poorly the city is running its public safety. The PD has some big issues and have taken votes of no confidence in both the Police Commissoner and the City Manger. The letter was sent to back up our brothers in the PBA. I am not saying we don't need more manpower just that the paper took it in the direction they wanted to get the best headline. The study recommends doing alot of things that they do not even mention, some of the recomendations are a lot harsher then hiring 4 career firefighters.

Here's my bear. I took this pic in my front yard 3/17/06. Heard about 4 shots(gun) about half hour before this fellow appeared. Turns out he was feeding out of someones goat pen and when the goat protested the bear fed off the goat. Have not seen the bear since.

  3. As long as fire departments and ambulance corps go 3 and 4 and 5 dispatches and response times are upwards of 15 minutes there will have to be a discussion of alternatives. And that will always include weighing the pros and cons of paid/combination departments/agencies and their all volunteer counterparts. In my eyes, it would defeat the purpose of this very forum if we didn't discuss the issue when applicable.

When the issue has to be discussed, it needs to be frank, respectful (that doesn't mean sugarcoating the facts) and thoughtful by all.

Very well put. While I agree the issue could be handled better. As long as people have passion about what they do it will continue to be a heated debate. There should be no reason for personal attacks, at the same time people should be allowed to express there opinion. If you do not agree with other people it is your right to express your opinion. To say we should sweep a very real issue under the carpet is just plain wrong. If you don't like the way a topic is going stop reading it and do not post in it, the topic will die quick if it is ignored.

  4. Post Rd. bridge is currently the furthest north. There is still a stretch of 95 to be completed approx. Midland Ave to the state line. When this area is rebuilt there will be two more dry hydrants added (fingers crossed) Midland Ave and Grace Church St. The problem with the system as it is, no one is taking responsiblity for the maintenance of the system.

  5. How come every time there is a fire in the area of Rye or in Rye a mutual aid issue comes up. Whats the deal do you miss us or is it that you feels sorry for us. Which every the case is it is nice to know every one cares so much about us. Maybe if everyone would have a few more fires we could come and join the party ( just let us know what to bring).

Unknown what engine this is I know it is the PlayHouse fire.

I am not 100% sure on all the trucks, took some guesses on what some may be.

  8. I know that they parked a engine on the broadwalk to draft I have never heard of a truck falling through. I have heard that someone sat on the hard suction hose (in the water) for hours to maintain the draft. I will ask around about a truck falling through. There also used to be some amazing photos(not sure which Playland fire). They were taken down during the remodel and have not reappeared.

  9. Looking through the DES web page it still has the Fire Advisory Board up but it shows the last meeting as having been a year ago. Does the board still meet, or for that matter even exist. If you look at the make up of the board it looks fairly diverse and maybe would have been a good place for the consolidation topic to be taken to. Anybody no what the deal is.
