  4. For the record, I am both a volunteer firefighter and a (union) DPW employee. I work for the Village that I grew up in, where I was a volunteer FF for approximately 12 years before moving out of the area. In that time, I don't ever remember my role as a volly ever getting in the way of my job. My job is just that, my job. It pays my bills and puts food on the table. I would never risk my career, especially for the volunteer FD. To my knowledge, my Village would not allow me to leave work for a fire call. Personally I've never cared enough to ask because I'm paid to be here, at work, working. My understanding is that you may leave work (in NYS) to respond to an alarm. However, your employer does not have to pay you for the time you were gone. Similarly, your employer can not penalize or fire you. Again, this is my understanding. Perhaps someone such as Barry could clear things up or elaborate. Again, as a DPW employee I do not allow my role as a volunteer firefighter to interfere with my job. I will also say that I agree with most people here in saying that you are paid by your employer to perform a job, not to be a fireman. Unless you are taken off the clock (while in the role of firefighter), it becomes a sticky situation (IMO). I don't agree that you should be paid while volunteering as a fireman. If any municipality is that hard-up for membership, perhaps they should hire (gasp) career firefighters. Or...wait for it....look into consolidation (I know, I must be delusional).
  5. Could you elaborate on where one could go to do as you've mentioned? I haven't really seen anybody "crying." What I do see is another blatant attempt to bash volunteers as you often seem to do. It seems you only post when it's a pro-career topic or anti-volly. I get it, you're a career FF (apparently) and you're proud of that. I get it and I totally understand it. I have nothing but respect for career firemen and am proud to call many of them my friends. Just don't understand why you continually waste your breathe on bashing vollies? Stay safe sir

  10. So, you're ASSUMING that crime isn't committed in rural areas? Look I am very pro 2nd amendment and exercise my right to carry almost daily. However, I have to agree with many of the members here and say that firearms do not belong on ambulances. When I rode EMS, there were several LEO's that I rode with who would conceal carry while riding the ambulance. Never once did it make me feel any safer. But you know what did? My training, experience, good scene size-up and knowing the PD was there or could be in seconds. As others have said, many times your best line of defense is a good offense and using your brain. If you can walk (or run) from a potentially bad situation, then you should do so. That goes beyond working in emergency services. I will chalk up your attitude and thoughts to your young age and inexperience. As you progress in emergency services, I think you'll change your views a bit. Pay attention and take the advise of senior men and women and stay safe.

  14. Last i heard they hired 2 who were to start the next Westchester Career Academy (which may have started?). 15 sounds like a LOT of new hires, especially for Newburgh but they certainly need the help! I know their staffing level is down by around 20 or so. I'm not good with grants, but will the City be able to keep these hires on the job when the grant expires?

  16. Not to sway from the OP's original purpose of this thread, but lol; glad you brought up Safe-IR. I literally just got home from the 2nd day of their TIC training. It was a two day course comprised of 1 full day of classroom and camera familiarization and 1 full day of practical evolution's at the FTC. Bob Athanas from R3 was our instructor and he was excellent in every aspect. I'd highly recommend anyone to contact them and look into the course. It truly opened my eyes and made me think outside of the box when it comes to TIC applications.

  23. This does not come as a surprise to me what-so-ever. I've said it on here plenty of times before and ill say it again; Crotons FAST is one of the most pro-active that i've had the pleasure of working with. They have been strong from their inception and continue their great work today. I've been out of Westchester for about 3 years now, so i'm somewhat out of the loop. So i'm always glad to see posts like this to keep me in touch with my roots. I was always glad to see Crotons FAST at any job as i knew they were competent and very able to perform the tasks at hand. They have ALWAYS been strong in their ground ladder placement and keeping egress a top priority. As always, job well done fellas! Of course, hats off to the OFD guys and gals as well, as they are one of the strongest vol forces in the County (IMO).
