  1. Hey everyone.

In the up coming months I will be doing a scenerio based drill with my department. The drill would be a report of a hydrogen sulfide leak inside a bussiness. My question is, is there a way to get a false positive on my sirius gas meter without accutal killing myself lol. I called MSA they did not know of any (like the meter is perfect). If anyone know of anything please let me know. Also if anyone has any other false positives for LEL,CO,O2 or VOC please let me know. Thanks

  2. FDNY has an ORANGE tag which is someone with a high suspect of a medical issue that is not trauma related like cardiac or asthma, its more of a clinical judgement.

Using this system i personally think its a waste of time, alot of people might disagree with me but i think we are making it more complicated then it should be.

so we have 5 tag colors: BLACK, RED, ORANGE, YELLOW, GREEN

  3. Some hospitals are to big to push out like Presby, but i belive the city will eventually run about 80-90%. FDNY picked up all of OLM (Monti North) 100% both ALS and BLS and has been pumping out classes like rabbits. Granted alot of members are expected to go to fire. Cassono is very pro EMS because they make ALOT of money for NYC. I heard that FDNY stopped one of the downtown hospitals from putting out another ALS by the fire department making a new rescue medic unit. They can charge a hospital up to 1 Million dollars a year to run 911 units. Once people stop paying there hospital bills or medicad stops paying out as much i belive you will see a decline in hospital based 911 units. Tho i don't want to see anyone lose there jobs in this shitty situation, its good to have the job securty.

  4. Except, as I understand it, they don't fall into the same chain of command. Do they? There is an EMS Lt. or Capt. at many runs we respond to, but as far as I know, they do not hold rank over firefighters. They hold authority at the incident as personnel with the higher degree of training....although some of the ems officers are EMT's and they oversee Medics. How does that work? What I'm really looking for is some insight into the EMS command system.

Even tho a Ems Lt or a fire Lt would never step on toes they are equal in rank regardless of what side there on. the FDNY is FDNY fire and FDNY EMS, both under the same umbrella. They both overall have to answer to the same chief, even tho there are both somewhat seperated the ranks are the same. Respect is given to one enother and both sides. I have never seen disrespect from either officer to office or firefighter to EMT's/Medics.

  5. Thanks for the reply. So is it safe to assume that once FD starts hiring again, people will start "promoting" to FF and create more openings once again in EMS?

EMS is the real money maker for the fire department with just a pick up to the hospital will run you 600 dollars and a cardiac arrest is close to 5000. Now they "share" this money with fire because its under one department thats why they were able to save those houses from closing some years ago. The fire department is starting to relize this and are trying to put out more units and run down the voluntary hospital units. Good luck bro.

  6. This might sould a little nieve but let'em burn. Carmel fire department had a tough fire at a Wedney's. Most of these buildings are put together rather quickly with truss roofs and other simple construction techniques. But anyway they leveled the rest of the building and placed a new one up no longer then 6 months from when it happened. Of coarse if its possible try to put them out but its not worth risking ur own or anyone elses life over.
