  1. I think the fact that something like has not happened here in the United States is a testament to our foreign and national security policy than anything else. As Margaret Mead once said: “Never doubt that a small group of committed people can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has.” I am honestly much more scared of home grown threats than anything abroad. We have destroyed the international terrorism pool only to grow it at home.
  2. I am willing to bet money that this "urban renewal" will only increase crime and fire duty in YO. Gonna be the South Bronx in the 70's. Only instead of The Bronx is Burning its going to be Central Ave is Burning. Good Luck Brothers.
  3. Don't even get me started. There are still numerous departments that fail to completely follow the bail-out law or NFPA standard regarding gear. Hopefully this is a wake up call to Commissioners and Chief Officers everywhere that you can not pick and choose which standards you follow or who can follow them. All standards and regulations must be applied totally across the board, if one interior member needs a bail-out, they all do, if your coat is over 15 years old, even if it saw no fire duty its gone. 2 in-2 out is a pipe dream.... I am sorry that this event had to happen but I am glad the PESH is as scathing as they were. It time to wake up and realize that various parts of the fire service in westchester is operating on an outdated and unsafe model...
  4. Yes, 100%. Even less than the school budget.
  5. Looks great, cant wait to see it in SoNo.
  6. Great Shots. Thanks and keep'em coming.
  7. RAM is the only division of Dodge making any money. They are protecting the money making operation from the money losing operation.
  8. Why would it be a waste? Have you never had the need for a pick up truck? Ever had 20 rolls of hose you needed to get back to the station to clean? Im not putting that inside an upholstered chiefs truck or back on a rig when it can easily and cleanly be transported in the bed of a pick up truck. That space is not wasted if you have a need and plan for its use. I have not seen the inside but to say if only contains a SCBA and a radio its a waste is a mistake. Yonkers FD new chiefs cars a pick up trucks with the bed cap and no defined storage space (as in pull out tray etc) is that a waste too? This is a utility, meaning that it needs to do many things, by filling that bed up with tools and etc you are distinctly limiting the uses of this vehicle, i.e. it is an equipment truck/rescue not a utility. Good luck with it PFD...
  9. I am curious to see how the dodge ram chassis holds up to emergency duty. there are not many dodge trucks in emergency services....
  10. pretty good reasons why not....
  11. We have had it in Vermont for the on/off-campus bus system for at least two year. Its cheap, effective and easy to implement. You can literally follow the path of the buses and see where and when they are supposed to be somewhere. You can get it from your smart phone, ipod, computer, tv etc. Would really be helpful as a public relations tool and to properly monitor unit locations.
  12. 25 to life for Grigoroff. "Meanwhile, Erick Grigoroff, the twin, is serving a sentence in state prison for a shooting in 2008 outside Popeye’s Pub in Cortlandt and is not eligible for release until 2015. And Mountain, 26, is serving time in federal prison on a drug conviction out of Westchester County and isn't due to get out until 2019." http://www.lohud.com/article/20101214/NEWS04/12140305/Teen-sentenced-to-25-to-life-for-2008-Garrison-murder
  13. Seeing as much of the Northeast is densely forested or at least has many trees of varying heights in the general area, a question came up as to what happens if someone or something requires from upper branches of a tree. I am looking for answers as to how one would rescue something or someone from a tree. I am talking about tree trimers, cats, dogs, bears, parrots, EDPs, star crossed lovers, hunters, kids out having some fun who have gotten stuck or injured up in a tree and required rescue. Obviously if there is road access then TL or Straight Stick would be easiest but what if you are rescuing a bow hunter is upside down suspended from his harness, 2 miles from the nearest road who now requires rescue. What has your department done for these situations? What worked, what did not and what could be done better next time? What techniques and special considerations were taken? If possible stories of the rescue as well would be very helpful. I know several departments in Westchester alone have had to face this issue; White Plains in 2008, Fairview in 2004, Port Chester in 2006?, Somers or Yorktown this year or last. Any one on one of these calls and have any information or suggestions to share? We are trying to access our capabilities to rescue victims from these types of situations. Understandably they are infrequent at best but it that exact infrequency that requires at least a knowledge and preparation, however it goes without saying that an incident of this type would be rather intense. Thanks for your help.
  14. x2. Especially with the anti labor sentiment rampant in the ranks of their elected leadership.
  15. That would require 1. You can get the bucket to the scene i.e. assuming it is not in the woods. 2. The bucket truck/arborist is not the one who requires rescue (which more than likely will be the person needing rescue 3. That someone would actual volunteer to let their privately owned, money making, business equipment be used in a rescue situation. Not everyone is as readily willing to share equipment when there is no economic gain. Every minute that bucket truck spends at an emergency, the fewer and fewer dollars that go in their revenue and pay checks and the less likely they are to assist. 4. That your wait time for a bucket truck/arborist is not extreme. These trucks are working, on the road and are on site much of the time, very rarely do they just sit around waiting to do work like fire apparatus. Thus, the wait time for one of these may prevent them from being an effective option. We are looking to at least be able to attempt rescues on our own, we are not looking to call a private company to maybe do it for us. We were looking to have our people trained and able, not hoping that some guy with a crash course on how to operate a bucket truck with questionable safety training is able and willing to respond and operate safely and within the existing command structure. Many of our members are trained and have extensive experience in rope rescue and other aspects of technical rescue, we are looking for idea and protocols for them to conduct this type of rescue as well as integrating this type of rescue into our equipment and SOPs/SOGs.
  16. In my many travels around this country I have spent a fair amount of time in National/State parks as well as preserves and refuges. During that time I have seen on at least 5 different occasions Bears entering camping grounds/occupied area and being scared up a tree. This obviously causes a problem in that you don't want an angry/scared bear up a tree surrounded by people and recreational activities. So you have to get it out of a tree, I have seen rubber bullets used, mace, water hoses, tranquilizers etc. So they have been known to dart a bear, let it pass out in the branches and then go and get it to relocate it. I remember this happening specifically in Blue Mountain Lake in the ADKs about 10 years ago with NYDEP/NYDEC/NYSP.
  17. WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO NEVER FORGET. I HOPE YOU ALL REMEMBER THIS NEXT TIME YOU VOTE, REMEMBER EXACTLY WHO BLOCKED THIS....
  18. Additionally the page in their website with NYFP news is very informative as to what their next steps are. They plan to be up and running by 9/11/2011. http://www.newyorkfirepatrol.com/NYFP_NEWS.html
  19. What is going on in I-684/SMRP/N. Westchester? Mutual Aid is flying all over the place. TMC has requested I-684 shutdown at Exit 4 Northbound and SMRP both North and South Bound in addition to local road closures. There is talk of at least 4 patients at one location and what sound like multiple MVAs with unknown injuries. At my count KFD, BFD w/EMS, AFD w/EMS, MKVAC, LVAC, BIFD, KBHVAC, 45-Medics and I am sure other agencies as well have been out all night.
  20. Just doing some basic research I found this SOP/SOG from Phoenix FD, AZ: PHOENIX REGIONAL STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES TREE RESCUE OPERATIONS http://www.phoenix.gov/FIRE/20413.pdf
  21. Stabilize BP maybe? Since the heart is pumping with gravity to most of your body most of the time, if you rotate a person 180 degrees the heart now has to use its energy to pump all the blood that was previously moved via gravity below the heart has to now be moved to an area above the heart. Possibly by applying the MAST pants you are preventing blood from having to be pumped to the area above the heart and up gradient thus decreasing strain on the heart and increasing BP?
  22. I got my reply this morning.
  23. I am not sure how this fits in but I thought that since NYS was a "no-fault" state it does not matter who was involved, you still pay. I could be wrong, in fact most likely I am, I am just going off of information from my insurance agent.
  24. I had a similar problem but I literally just kept marking each and every field with information that it asked for. I am just curious to know if I got in or not...
  25. you should read Stiff by Mary Roach then; it is a fantastic book that will illuminate you into the life of bodies once the individual has died. http://www.amazon.com/Stiff-Curious-Lives-Human-Cadavers/dp/0393050939
