  1. Does anybody remember the Green's fire on 4th Avenue in Mt. Vernon ?  I think that it was a saturday night during July of 1960 or 61.  Hundreds of firefighters from Mt. Vernon, all of southern Westchester and FDNY.

I remember my uncles and cousins telling me that the all service masks being used at the time was not able to filter out the toxic plastics in the smoke,  SCBA's were new and there were only a few around.

A half dozen ladder pipes on both the 4th and 5th Avenue sides of the building finally put the fire out over 12 hours later.

I wasn't there dadbo, in fact I wasn't even born, but I know for a fact that FDMV had their 3rd Truck in service fighting that General Alarm in addition to their 6th Engine. Can you imagine that? That was also during a time where there weren't that many Fires and you didn't have to rely on Mutual Aid as much. Boy how times have changed! Unfortunately, not for the Better!

  2. Where do you think this discussion is getting us? Its pointless we all know whats going on!!!!!

If it's pointless then there's no reason for you to even comment on this topic. I don't think the Career guys in FDMV think it's a frivolous topic, especially when many of them are the ones bringing it to light and discussing it on the forum, not the YFD members as you mistakingly think. They dropped their replies soon after they stopped responding into FDMV on Mutual Aid, which, as was previously stated on the forum, may be a solution to their abuse of the M.A. Policy, and a reason to supplement their manpower and equipment. However, it takes all the surrounding Departments, Career and Combination to take a Stand and make it Work! If the Top Brass of these adjacent Departments doesn't want to make this decision than maybe the Unions should! Then again, that would require some so called Union members to turn down their Dept's. Call BACK O.T., which is another issue in itself. As long as guys continue to run back to work for the almighty Dollar, so they can provide Fire Protection for the City of MT.Vernon at another taxpayers expense, FDMV will continue to face this everlasting saga, and constantly rely on Mutual Aid. It's unfortunate, but then again that's what ERNIE wants.
